ROCHESTER, NY - Playing in her hometown, it was a lone tally from junior striker
Kelsey O'Leary (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia HS) that paved the way for Daemen to score their first win over American Mideast Conference rival Roberts Wesleyan since Sept. 27, 2005 as the Wildcats rebounded from their first conference loss to top the host Raiders under the lights tonight. With the win, Daemen improves to 8-3, 4-1 on the season while Roberts falls to 5-6, 2-3.
"Our defense played tremendous today," said Daemen head coach
Dan Dolan. "It was a nice win, especially for our seniors to finally beat Roberts. It's always been a competitive, hard fought rivalry between our teams. It's nice to be on the winning side today."
O'Leary's marker, her team-leading ninth of the season, came unassisted in the 34th minute.
It was freshman goalkeeper
Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY/DeRuyter HS) behind the defensive combination of senior
Kelsi Maciejewski (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora HS), sophomore
Rachael Banasik (Depew, NY/Depew HS) and freshman
Hannah Fraser (Milton, VT/Milton HS) that drew the praise of Dolan. Hampton turned away six shots between the pipes to pick up the shutout.
At 4-1 in the conference, Daemen moves into a tie with Walsh for second place, just a half game behind Houghton (5-1) who defeated the Wildcats last week. The Wildcats begin a season-long three game home-stand this Saturday when they face Point Park at 2pm.
