Engel Scores Twice To Lead Daemen Past Carlow

AMHERST, NY - The Daemen Wildcats improved to 2-0 and have yet to allow a goal in American Mideast Conference play as they blitzed the visiting Carlow Celtics by the final score of 5-0 in a Saturday matinee affair at Dimp Wagner Stadium. Sophomore Samantha Engel (Dryden, NY/Dryden HS) notched two goals, her fifth and sixth tallies of the season to lead the way as Daemen, now 5-2 overall, regrouped after a tough 3-1 loss to Brockport this past Tuesday.

"We played a complete game," said Daemen head coach Dan Dolan. "Obviously, I'm real happy with our effort and performance."

Engel got on the board early as she put Daemen ahead 1-0 in the second minute of the contest when her shot got past Carlow keeper Ashlyn Fratto after a failed Carlow clearing attempt. Engel would add her second of the day later in the half and Daemen goals off of failed clearing attempts by the Celtics would become prevalent.

Sandwiched between Engel's tallies was a goal from junior Kelsey O'Leary (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia HS), her team-leading seventh of the season. O'Leary finished a fine play that started with a great run up the right wing by senior Jenelle Masi (Greece, NY/Greece Athena HS) as she was fed by fellow senior Alicia Vasiloff (East Syracuse, NY/East Syracuse-Minoa HS); both Masi and Vasiloff earned assists on the play.

Masi and Vasiloff were not done as each would add second half tallies of their own to put the game completely out of reach.

Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY/DeRuyter HS) tied a career-high with 11 saves to record the shutout for Daemen.

Daemen jumps back into action with a road test tomorrow across town when they face Medaille at Robert E. Rich All-High Stadium beginning at 2pm.
