AMHERST, NY - The Daemen Wildcats made short work of a second straight opponent tonight as they dispatched of the visiting Buffalo State Bengals in a little over an hour with a straight set victory (25-11, 25-21, 25-16) before 136 fans at Lumsden Gymnasium. With the win, Daemen improves to 19-6 on the season, setting a new high-water mark for wins in a season during
Mark Parisi's seven-year tenure as head coach. Buffalo State, meanwhile, falls to 8-12.
It was the combination of sophomore
Jenn Karan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park HS) and junior
Joanna Fretthold (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda HS) that again did much of the damage for Daemen. Karan posted a match-high 11 kills to go with a match-high 17 digs while Fretthold chipped in with nine kills of her own.
"We've really been able to ride the strong play of Jenn and Joanna through this stretch of our schedule," Parisi said. "Hopefully they can keep it up."
Setters
Kimmie Mack (Livonia, NY/Livonia HS) and
Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West HS) split 24 assists in the match while Daemen also got strong contributions from freshmen
Lindsey Nowak (West Seneca, NY/Immaculata Acad.),
Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, NY/Alexander Central HS) and sophomore Rachel Ottoway (Sherman, NY/Sherman Central HS). Nowak put down eight kills and had two blocks while Ottoway notched six kills and three blocks. Turcer led all Daemen servers with four service aces.
Next up for Daemen is another non-conference tilt tomorrow night. This one is on the road at NCAA Division II Edinboro. The Wildcats then return home for a huge American Mideast Conference match at 11am on Saturday vs. Point Park.
