DAYTONA BEACH, FL - For the second consecutive day the Daemen Wildcats volleyball squad breezed past their first opponent of the day before winning in spectacular fashion later on, sweeping their four matches as part of the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University Labor Day Tournament in the process. It took just 58 minutes for Daemen to dispatch of Peru State (NE) this morning in straight sets (25-18, 25-16, 25-9) before winning another five-set thriller over Oklahoma City University (24-26, 23-25, 25-13, 25-20, 15-13). With the wins, Daemen improves to 10-3.
The trio of sophomore
Jenn Karan (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park High School), freshman
Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen High School) and junior
Joanna Fretthold (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda High School) once again led the way for the Daemen offensive attack in the thriller vs. OKC. Karan put down a career-high 18 kills with a .231 attack percentage. Wang managed 14 kills of her own for her seventh match of double figure kills already this season. Fretthold was next with 13 kills including back-to-back strikes with the match knotted at 13-13 in the final set to seal the deal.
Setters
Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, NY/Kenmore West High School) and
Kimmie Mack (Livonia, NY/Livonia High School) aided the Daemen offense once again with 30 and 14 assists, respectively. For Vazquez, the assist total was the second highest of her career.
Defensively, Fretthold added 22 digs while fellow junior
Katie Auge (Salamanca, NY/Salamanca High School) contributed 21 digs. In Karan's finest offensive match of her career, she also notched a career-best 17 digs.
In the earlier rout of Peru State, Wang led the way offensively with nine kills while Karan, freshman
Lindsey Nowak (West Seneca, NY/Immaculata Academy) and sophomore
Kaitlin Watchey (Jamestown, NY/Jamestown High School) had five apiece.
Mack paced the Daemen setters with 16 helpers while Vazquez reached double figures with 11.
Daemen returns to the court for four more matches next weekend at the Julie Martin Memorial Classic hosted by Madonna University (MI).
