Box Score NORTH CANTON, OH - A corner jump shot by junior
Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, NY/James Madison HS) with 52 seconds left broke a 54-54 tie and paved the way for the visiting Daemen Wildcats to pick up their first road win at Walsh University since February 20, 2009 tonight at the Cavaliers' Alumni Arena. With the win, Daemen improves to 15-4 on the season while remaining unblemished in conference play with a 6-0 mark.
Stanfield put the Wildcats ahead 54-52 with a jumper from the short corner with 1:35 to play. Following a Cavalier bucket, Stanfield got loose along the baseline again, and from the identical spot she had just hit from, she put the visitors on top again. This time, the lead would stick as Daemen came through with a key stop on Walsh's next possession. Junior guard
Ellie Allen (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home HS) provided the final margin with two of her team-high 19 points from the charity stripe with under 10 seconds to go.
Walsh (8-10, 5-3) got 19 second chance points off 22 offensive rebounds but faltered down the stretch. After trailing by six at the half (28-22), Walsh erased the Daemen lead and established a seven point advantage of their own at 50-43 - their largest lead of the game - after an old-fashioned three-point play by Daniella Ciccarone with 5:23 to play. Daemen responded with an absolute bomb from three-point range by Allen and them held the Cavs to 1-for-4 shooting while forcing 5 turnovers in the game's pivotal moments.
Allen notched seven rebounds and seven assists as well for Daemen. Stanfield finished with 14 on 7-of-11 shooting from the field.
Monica Kosior (Grimsby, ON/Blessed Trinity SS) matched Allen's rebounding total to share the team lead.
Tracy Payne paced the Cavs with a game-high 22 points.
Next up for Daemen is a trip to Boston this weekend where they'll face conference for Fisher on Saturday before a non-conference tilt at The College of St. Joseph's in Rutland, VT on Sunday.
