Turnovers Doom Daemen In 1st Place Showdown Vs. Point Park

1/28/2012 6:38:00 PM

Box Score WEST MIFFLIN, PA - It's not often that a team can shoot 30% from the field, score just 51 points, get out-rebounded by five and still win but that's exactly what happened this afternoon as the Point Park Pioneers (16-4, 7-0 AMC) won their 11th straight by defeating the #19 Daemen Wildcats 53-41 to remain unbeaten in conference play and assume control of first place in the AMC standings. Daemen (18-5, 8-1 AMC), despite winning the battle of the boards (42-37) and converting their field goal attempts at a slightly higher rate (35%; 18-for-52), found themselves on the losing end today, snapping their own seven-game winning streak, thanks in large part to the 25 turnovers they committed.

"We shot ourselves in the foot by turning the ball over so much," said Daemen head coach Dave Skolen, who saw his team limited to a season-low in points scored. "We were pretty good defensively, but they were better. They got a lot of deflections that resulted in turnovers."

After falling behind 8-0 to start the game, Daemen persevered, tying the score at 14-14 on a layup by senior Courtney Donovan. The Wildcats took their first, and subsequently, only lead of the game at 16-15 on a bucket by freshman Jordyn Broas with 5:57 to go in the opening period. Point Park quickly responded with back-to-back three-point baskets by Kristen Beatty and April Austin. Austin added a steal and layup to push the Pioneer lead to seven at 23-16. At half's end, the Wildcats found themselves down 27-21.

With the deficit at a manageable margin, the Wildcats faltered to open the second half, going 5:49 without scoring while Point Park extended their lead to 12 at 33-21. Daemen committed five turnovers and shot 0-for-7 from the field during that span.

Daemen used a 9-4 spurt late in the game, capped by a three-pointer from sophomore Lindsay Stoddard to cut the deficit to just four, 47-43, with 1:15 to play. After Daemen forced a missed jumper from Point Park's Emily Schartner, it appeared Daemen would have a chance to make it a one-possession game. The Pioneers' Jocelyn Peterkin had other ideas, however, as she scooped up the rebound and put it back in to hold off any thought of a Daemen comeback.

Peterkin led the way for Point Park with 14 points and nine rebounds. Austin was next with 12 points, five rebounds and five steals. Kristen Veseleny added 11 points on 5-for-7 shooting.

Junior center Monica Kosior was the lone double figure scorer for Daemen with 10 to go with 11 rebounds for the first double-double of her career. Ellie Allen added nine points and seven rebounds in a losing effort.

Daemen has little time to lick its wounds as they host rival Roberts Wesleyan on Tuesday at 5:30. The Wildcats were 58-54 winners over the Raiders back on January 10 in Skolen's 400th career victory. On Tuesday, there will be a brief ceremony prior to tipoff honoring Skolen for his accomplishment.
