Daemen Win Streak Halted By St. Thomas Aquinas

10/21/2012 4:18:00 PM

Box Score AMHERST, NY - The Daemen Wildcats suffered a 3-1 defeat today at the hands of the St. Thomas Aquinas Spartans on a mild and sunny day at Dimp Wagner Stadium.  Daemen, who entered today's game in the midst of a three-game winning streak, falls to 6-9 on the season while St. Thomas Aquinas, a member of the East Coast Conference of NCAA Division II, improves to 4-9-1.

A scoreless first half was interrupted when the Spartans' Mae Comerford scored the first of her two goals in the 44th minute, putting St. Thomas Aquinas ahead 1-0 and stealing some momentum that Daemen had built with some near misses on their first half scoring chances.

Comerford struck again in the 60th minute as she outraced a Daemen defender to a long feeding pass up the right side from teammate Maddison Lord.  Once she won the ball, Comerford struck a high shot inside the far post, past Daemen goalkeeper Rachel Reichart (Marilla, NY/Iroquois Central) who made her second straight start in place of the injured Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY/DeRuyter).

The Wildcats made things interesting late when Alexa Amato (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island) scored her seventh goal of the season, and her fifth in the last four games.  Amato took a pass from sophomore Juli Prentice (Dryden, NY/Dryden) up the left sideline and beat Spartan goalkeeper Amanda Volpe with a high shot inside the far post in the 87th minute.

The Spartans quickly countered with a goal from Becky Torres in the 90th minute to dispel any thoughts of a full Daemen comeback.

The Wildcats, who are currently awaiting their seed for the USCAA National Championships (Nov. 1-3 at Asheville, NC), will round out their regular season with road games at Roberts Wesleyan (Oct. 27) and Fisher (Oct. 28) next weekend.
