Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) and
Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ont./Canisius College) both recorded a double-double to lead the Daemen College women's basketball team to a 72-41 victory over Fanshawe College (Ont.) today at DC's Lumsden Gymnasium.
Daemen, which was playing its fourth game in five days, improved to 4-0. It marked the season-opener for the Falcons.
Stanfield totaled 14 points and 12 rebounds, and also recorded three assists and four steals. Kosior added 10 points, 14 rebounds and a career-high six blocks. Senior
Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) added 10 points and five assists for the hosts, while freshmen
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) reached double figures for the fourth-straight game and finished with 13 points, three assists and two steals. Senior
Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) turned a solid all-around game for the Wildcats with eight points, seven rebounds, six assists, two blocks and two steals.
Freshman Stephanie Antwi (Toronto, Ont.) totaled 12 points, five rebounds and three steals for the Falcons, while sophomore Samantha Highgate (London, Ont.) grabbed 19 rebounds and scored six points.
Daemen jumped out to a 12-4 lead and later took a 14-point advantage, 22-8, with 10:11 left before the break when a Stanfield steal led to a layup by Andorka. The teams traded baskets and the hosts held a 26-12 advantage when the Falcons put together a 10-0 run. A putback by Highgate following a missed free throw with 5:42 left before intermission capped the run and made the score 26-22 Daemen. The Wildcats used a 6-2 spurt over the final two minutes of the half for an eight-point (37-29) halftime lead.
Daemen scored the first eight points of the second half, and later increased its lead to 21 points, 58-37, following a jumper by Kosior with 8:37 to play. A three-pointer by Stilwell with 4:15 left upped the lead to 29 points, 68-39.
Daemen, which forced 29 turnovers in the game, has now held three of its first four opponents to under 50 points. The Wildcats finished with a commanding 50-24 advantage in points in the paint, and also had a 29-9 edge in points off turnovers..
Daemen is idle until Friday (Nov. 2) when it hosts Guelph University in opening round action of the Knee Center of WNY Classic. Game time is 6 p.m.
