AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's basketball team used a 29-2 spurt to open the second half en route to a 99-50 victory over the University of Maine-Fort Kent in a battle of United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) teams today at Lumsden Gymnasium.
The Wildcats, newly ranked #1 atop the USCAA National Poll, got a performance for the ages out of junior guard
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) who pumped in a career high 24 points while also dishing 12 assists which matched a career high (Jan. 21, 2012 vs. Fisher). Stoddard connected on nine of her 14 field goal attempts, including a 5-of-8 showing from three-point range.
Daemen improves to 11-2 on the season while the Lady Bengals, ranked tenth in the latest poll, fall to 5-4.
Daemen gained control in the first half with a 14-3 run that saw them extend their lead from just six points up to 17 (33-16) with 4:39 remaining in the period. Redshirt freshman guard
Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) keyed the run with five of her 16 points off the Wildcat bench.
Later in the half, Daemen extended the lead to 21 (39-18) on a jumper by senior guard
Ellie Allen (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) at the 1:18 mark. Five quick UMFK points temporarily cut into the deficit but the Wildcats got baskets from senior center
Monica Kosior (Grimsby, Ont./Canisius College) and Stoddard to close out the half leading by 20 (43-23).
Then came the Wildcats' signature spurt of the ballgame, outscoring the visitors by 27 points over the first seven-plus minutes of the half to lead 72-25 at the 12:23 mark. Stoddard accounted for 10 points, including three triples, while assisting on seven other baskets in the run.
UMFK would score the next seven points to momentarily keep the Wildcats at bay, but still trailed 72-32 with 11:08 to play.
Daemen quickly regrouped and used a 14-2 spurt to run the margin up to 52 (86-34) with 7:51 remaining. Back-to-back-to-back three-point shots from
Lia Zahn (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua), Stoddard and Stilwell highlighted the Daemen spurt.
The Lady Bengals would never get closer than 43 points the rest of the way.
Daemen held a 42-24 advantage at points in the paint and a 26-8 edge in fastbreak points while shooting 49% for the game (41-for-83). Stilwell's 16 points helped the Daemen bench outscore the UMFK reserves 34-7.
UMFK, playing its' third game in as many days, was limited to just 19-for-71 shooting (27%) in the game.
Senior guard/forward
Chelsea Andorka (Canton, Ohio/Notre Dame College) chipped in her usual 14 points and seven rebounds for Daemen while Allen totaled 11 points, six rebounds and five assists.
Kosior added eight points and four blocked shots while her team-leading eight rebounds helped the Wildcats control the boards, outrebounding UMFK 57-44 in the contest.
Zahn contributed nine points off the bench while fellow senior
Samantha Stanfield (Brooklyn, N.Y./James Madison) added eight points, seven boards and three assists.
Samantha Carapellucci (Fort Kent, Maine/Fort Kent Community) paced the Lady Bengals with 13 points and six rebounds. Jennifer Colpitts (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) and Ericka Christensen (Warren, Maine/Medomak Valley) split 24 points between them while Christensen added a game-high nine rebounds.
Daemen is idle until partaking in the Shawnee State Tournament on December 15-16 in Portsmouth, Ohio. While there, the Wildcats will face two of the finer NAIA teams in the country - Shawnee State (December 15 at 8pm) and Georgetown College (December 16 at 11am). The host Bears are ranked #2 in the pre-season NAIA Division I poll and already own a victory over Daemen this season, having defeated the Wildcats 57-39 here on November 4. Georgetown (Ky.), ranked sixth in the NAIA Division I pre-season poll, defeated Daemen a season ago, 70-59, in a neutral site contest in New Orleans, La.
