Daemen Dominated By NAIA #8 Spring Arbor

9/27/2012 7:16:00 PM

Box Score ROCHESTER, NY - The Daemen Wildcats were out-played in every which way on the pitch today in what was the team's worst loss in almost four years, falling 6-1 to the Spring Arbor Cougars in a neutral site game at the Redhawks Classic hosted by Roberts Wesleyan College.  The Wildcats, who hadn't lost by more than three goals since a 7-0 loss in their 2008 season finale to Ohio Dominican, drop to 2-2-0 on the young season.  The Cougars, ranked #8 in the most recent NAIA National Poll, improve to 3-0-1.

Daemen managed just three shots on goal in the contest, including one in the opening 45 minutes.  Constant possession and pressure by Spring Arbor resulted in a 4-0 Cougar lead at the half.

"They played excellent," said Daemen head coach Dan Dolan.  "They're a top 10 team in the NAIA for a reason.  Their effort was outstanding whistle-whistle.  We did what we could and were able to take some things away from them.  But, we just have to get back after it tomorrow."

The Cougars got singles tallies from Megan Wegener, Ashley DeNio, Brooklyn Morgan, Shannon Balcer, Samantha Sturgeon and Karly Linton.  Wegener got things started with her marker in the 19th minute before assisting on DeNio's goal in the 24th minute, which proved to be the game-winner.

Sturgeon's ninth goal of the season in the 54th minute was answered by Daemen's Kim Obermeier (Depew, NY/Depew HS) who scored just 38 seconds later in the 55th minute.  Obermeier booted her goal off a nice crossing feed by junior Alexa Amato (Grand Island, NY/Grand Island HS) who broke loose down the sideline and picked up an assist on the play.

Linton's goal in the 70th minute gave the Cougars their five-goal cushion once again and concluded the scoring.

Spring Arbor launched 26 shots at Daemen goalkeeper Kayla Hampton (DeRuyter, NY/DeRuyter HS), placing 13 on frame.  Hampton made seven saves on the night.

Little time remains for the Wildcats to lick their wounds.  They must re-group quickly as they face the Rio Grande Red Storm tomorrow at 5pm back in Rochester.  The Wildcats defeated the Red Storm 3-1 last year.
