EDINBORO, Pa. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team built a two-sets-to-one lead but couldn't seal the deal, dropping a five-set thriller (21-25, 25-22, 25-15, 19-25, 11-15) on the road to Edinboro University in a non-confernece match at McComb Fieldhouse tonight.
The loss was Daemen's fourth straight - three of which have went the distance - as the Wildcats fall below .500 (8-9 overall) for the first time since opening the year by going 1-3 at the Courtyard by Marriott Invitational in Boca Raton, Fla.
Edinboro (13-9 overall) took the first set, but Daemen battled back, winning the next two to put themselves one set away from knocking off the Fighting Scots for the second straight season. Â The Wildcats were downright dominant in the third set, putting down 17 kills and attacking at a .536 clip while limiting the hosts to just a .091 attack percentage.
Edinboro bounced back to knot the match with a 25-19 win in the fourth set to force the deciding fifth.
In the fifth set, Edinboro took command and hammered home 10 kills while committing just two errors (.381 attack percentage) en route to the 15-11 win and the match.
Marah Maycock had a match-high 19 kills for the Fighting Scots who also got 17 kills from Tabitha Meeks. Â Katie Felix put up 42 assists and Haley Marett notched 21 digs as well.
Junior middle blocker
Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen) led a balanced attack for Daemen with 14 kills and six blocks. Â Classmate
Lindsey Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y./Immaculata) was next with 12 kills. Â Senior
Brittany Anthon (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) added 11 and classmate
Kaitlin Watchey (Jamestown, N.Y./Jamestown) matched a season-high with 10 kills in the loss.
Senior setter
Kaley Vazquez (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) had a season-best 30 assists - the 13th time in her career she's had 30 or more. Â Junior
Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) chipped in with 19 assists as well.
Anthon and
Paige Tilert (Derby, N.Y./Genesee CC) led the Daemen ball control efforts with 12 and 11 digs, respectively.
The loss tonight was just Daemen's third non-conference loss against an NCAA Division II East Region opponent since the start of the 2012 season (15-3 overall in those matches) and just their second loss in their last five matches against Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opponents.
The Wildcats look to get back on track at home. Â Daemen kicks off a season-long six-match homestand when they host East Coast Conference foe Queens College on Saturday (Oct. 19) for a 2 p.m. match at Lumsden Gymnasium.
