ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The first-ever East Coast Conference victory for the Daemen College women's basketball team was certainly a memorable one.
Daemen used a barrage of three-pointers and rallied from a 24-point second-half deficit enroute to a thrilling 88-86 overtime victory over Molloy College here tonight. Daemen snapped its six-game losing streak and improved to 3-6 overall and 1-3 in the ECC. Molloy (6-3, 3-1) saw its four-game winning streak come to an abrupt end and suffered its first league loss of the season.
Daemen set school-records for three-pointers made (16) and attempted (47) in the game.
Sophomore Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) led the charge, as the 5-foot-3 guard canned 8-of-20 from downtown and finished with a career-high 26 points. She tied the school-record for three-pointers made in a game orginally set by Angela Tylec in 2002 and 2003. Stilwell also tied the school-record for three-pointers attempted in a game, also set by Tylec in 2003. Freshman Taylor Heinold (Hamburg ,N.Y./Immaculata Academy) made several clutch free throws down the stretch and finished with a career-high 23 points. She connected on 6-of-10 field goals and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. Senior Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) turned in her usual solid effort and finished with 19 points, a career-high 11 rebounds, six assists and two steals. Freshman Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added 10 points and six rebounds, while fellow rookie Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Cardinal O'Hara) finished with three points, eight rebounds, three assists and four steals.
Juniors Allison Smith (Blairstown, N.J.) and Megan Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) both netted 15 points for Molloy, while classmate Nicole Arnone (Staten Island, N.Y.) aded 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
Molloy held a 48-29 lead at halftime and opened up its largest lead of the game, 72-48, following a jumper by junior Taylor Kenney (Wantagh, N.Y.) with 8:40 left to play. Daemen scored the next six points and later cut the lead to 13 points following a triple by Stilwell with just over four minutes to play. A layup by Stilwell cut the lead to single digits, 77-68, with 3:30 left, but the Lions answered with a disputed three-pointer by senior Kelly Guerriero (Floral Park, N.Y.) on its next possession.
The Wildcats refused to quit and after Stoddard drained back-to-back three-pointers the lead was down to six points, 80-74, with 2:13 left. Heinold was fouled on the same possession and calmly canned to free throws to make it a four point game. Molloy came up empty on its next possession and Heinold canned two free throws at the other end to make it a one-possession game, 80-78. A Molloy turnover led to a game-tying layup by Stoddard with 1:05 remaining. Arnone had a chance to put Molloy back on the top with 42 seconds left but missed two free throws, and after a Daemen turnover the Lions had possession with the shot clock off. Guerriero missed a three-pointer from the corner with three seconds left and the game was headed to overtime.
Smith opened the scoring a minute into the extra session when she made one-of-two free throws, and the Lions later took an 83-80 lead after Arnone canned a jumper with 3:14 left in OT. Both teams came up empty on their next possession and Daemen then cut the lead to a point after Heinold canned two free throws with 2:40 left. Molloy failed to score and Stoddard was then fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound at the other end. Stoddard gave Daemen its first lead of the game, 84-83, after she made both free throws with 2:06 remaining.
Molloy answered with two free throws by Lonergan 17 seconds later. The score remained 85-84 until Stilwell fed Heinold for backdoor layup with 1:02 left. After both teams failed to score Heinold was fouled during a scramble for a rebound and once again hit both free throws to give the Wildcats an 88-85 lead with 22 seconds left. Guerriero then miss-fired on a three-pointer with 10 seconds left. Daemen gained possession, but the Wildcats committed a foul following a missed shot with less than five seconds left. Molloy made one-of-two free throws and Stoddard was fouled with 2.4 seconds left. Stoddard missed the first and was called for a violation on the second, leaving the score 88-86 with 2.4 seconds left. Molloy called a timeout to setup a final desperation attempt, but the Lions never got the shot off.
Molloy jumped out to an early double-digit lead, as Smith scored the first 10 points of the game. The Wildcats used the three-point line to erase the deficit, as Heinold and Stilwell both hit two three-pointers during a 12-2 Daemen run that tied the game at 12-12 six minutes into the contest. The hosts regained the lead following a three-pointer by Smith with 12:54 left before the break, and the Lions later opened up an 11-point advantage, 30-19, after Kenney drained a triple with 7:47 to play before intermission.
The teams traded baskets for the next four minutes before the Lions ran off 12 unanswered points that gave the hosts a commanding 21-point lead. A layup by Arnone with 1:17 remaining in the half capped the run and gave Molloy a 46-25 lead. Molloy took a 48-29 lead into the break.
Free throws played a big role in the game. Daemen made 6-of-8 from the charity stripe during overtime and was 18-for-28 overall. Molloy shot just 51-percent (19-for-37) from the line overall, including an 18-for-34 clip during the second half and overtime.
Daemen will remain in the New York City area and play at Queens College Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
