EDINBORO, Pa. - The Daemen College women's soccer team suffered its first setback of the season today, falling 1-0 to Edinboro University at Sox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro, of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, improved to 2-1 on the young season, while Daemen fell to 2-1.
"I thought we played better and with more intensity as the game went on," said Daemen head coach Dan Dolan. "We had a few chances but their goalkeeper did a nice job making some saves. It was good to play a game like this though. It was good preparation for our tough East Coast Conference schedule."
Edinboro's Becca Costello got the Fighting Scots on the board early. She picked up a loose ball near the top of the box, weaved through a couple Daemen defenders and chipped her shot just under the crossbar in the ninth minute.
EU goalkeeper Meghan Kelly made four saves to preserve the shutout.
Daemen's net-minder, redshirt freshman Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) - the reigning the ECC Rookie of the Week - did her part to keep the Wildcats in it with a career-best 11 saves.
Daemen was attempting to open the season with three straight wins for the first time in team history. Their 2-0 start matched the team record set in 2009 and 2012. The loss also snapped Daemen's seven-game winning streak dating back to last season.
The game was played as scheduled despite a power outage in the area which put the stadium completely offline. A scheduled live video stream and live stats feed were not able to operate. Wednesday's extreme heat was blamed for the outage.
The Wildcats return to the friendly confines of Dimp Wagner Stadium when they host Davis & Elkins College in a non-league contest this Saturday, Sept. 14. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
