Volleyball Drops Home Matchup With Rival Redhawks

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team fell to visiting Roberts Wesleyan College in three sets (22-25, 20-25, 14-25) in an East Coast Conference match tonight at Lumsden Gymnasium, closing out the Wildcats' season-long four-match home-stand.

Tonight's result gave the Redhawks a sweep of the season series against the Wildcats.  You have to go back to 2007 to find the last time that happened, as Daemen has dominated the series against their longtime rivals of late, winning 10 of the last 15 matchups including tonight's setback.

RWC improved to 10-6 overall with the victory, including a 6-3 mark in league play.  Daemen dropped to 1-21 overall and 1-8 in the ECC.

Daemen looked poised to open with a first-set victory tonight as the Wildcats built a 21-18 lead, capped by a kill from sophomore Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster).  That's when RWC responded with six consecutive points, book-ended by kills from Kendall Havener.  The Wildcats momentarily stopped the Redhawks' momentum after a bad set by the Redhawks to draw within two (24-22), but Havener closed out the set with another smash on the enusing point.

In the second set, RWC opened up an 18-9 lead before Daemen began to climb back.  The Wildcats regrouped with a 6-1 spurt, which included kills from Drzymala and senior Lindsey Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y./Immaculata), and a service ace from freshman Alicia Contreras (Arcadia, Calif./Arcadia), to make it a four-point deficit (19-15).

RWC regained control with three quick points, but Daemen battled back again.  Trailing 22-15, the Wildcats rattled off five of the next six points to pull within three (23-20) on the back of Drzymala who accounted for two kills and two service aces in the run.  But, the Redhawks got a kill from Judy Schultz to put themselves on the brink of a two-sets-to-none lead, which came to fruition on the ensuing point, a service ace by Schultz.

Daemen couldn't kick it into gear in the third after falling behind 6-0.  The Wildcats would get no closer than four points the remainder of the set as RWC cruised to close out the match.

The Wildcats had no answer for the Redhawks' net presence.  RWC racked up 18 block assists and two solo blocks which played a pivotal role in limiting Daemen to an attack percentage of just .072 in the match.

RWC's Jordan Wilson notched a match-high 12 kills while Schultz chipped in with 11.  Maggie Concannon racked up 34 assists while Courtney Taylor (nine kills, seven block assists) and Havener (six kills, seven digs, seven block assists) also produced.

Drzymala and Nowak led the way for Daemen with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.  Freshman setter Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) put up 21 assists while classmate Jenna Reeser (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home) recorded a match-high 10 digs.

Daemen finishes a busy week on the road as they travel east to face the University of Bridgeport (Friday, Oct. 17, 7 p.m.) and Dowling College (Saturday, Oct. 18, 11 a.m.) in ECC action.
