AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 loss tonight to East Coast Conference-brethren New York Institute of Technology on a cold and soggy Halloween evening at Dimp Wagner Stadium.
NYIT picked up their first ECC win of the season (1-5-2) with the result tonight, while improving to 4-9-3 overall. Â Daemen, which was coming off Wednesday's 1-0 non-conference shutout of Alfred University, dropped to 4-12-1 overall and 0-7-1 in the league.
After a scoreless first half, Christina Viaggio put the guests on the board in the 58th minute. Â Fran Glenny's long free kick sailed into the box where Viaggio came in unmarked, heading the ball inside the right post.
Later in the half, it was Glenny's turn.  The Australia native launched a rocket from the top of the box on a nifty set piece off a corner kick.  Two NYIT players ran past Malissa Horan's pass out of the corner, distracting the Daemen defense and allowing Glenny to get free up top where she did the rest.  It was Glenny's  team-leading fifth tally of the season.
Daemen got a pair of shots on goal from senior
Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) and single ones from
Alexis Ruggiero (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster),
Cassidy Kozub (West Seneca, N.Y./Orchard Park) and
Juli Prentice (Dryden, N.Y./Dryden). Â All of Daemen's shots came in the second half.
Daemen's
Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) made a game-high six saves in a losing effort for the Wildcats. Â Her counterpart, Colombian-born Vanessa Cordoba, made five stops to earn her fourth victory of the season.
Daemen will close the regular season against perennial ECC powerhouse Long Island University Post this Sunday, Nov. 2 at 11 a.m. Â Before the game, a brief ceremony will be held to honor Daemen's graduating seniors - Stoddard, Prentice,
Faye-Lyne Noel (Williamsville, N.Y./Christian Central),
Meghan Diehl (Webster, N.Y./Webster Thomas) and
Rachael Banasik (Depew, N.Y./Depew). Â Following Sunday's game, the Wildcats head to West Virginia for the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) National Championships where they'll face sixth-seeded Carlow University on Thursday, Nov. 6.
