Edinboro Tops Women's Volleyball In Four Sets

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team dropped the first match of their season-long four-match home stand tonight, suffering a four-set defeat (19-25, 19-25, 25-18, 20-25) at the hands of visiting Edinboro University in a non-conference matchup at Lumsden Gymnasium.  With the loss, Daemen drops to 1-18 on the season.  Edinboro, which was picked sixth in the western division of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference preseason poll, improved to 14-5 with the win.

Marah Maycock paced the victors with 13 kills while Jen Gruber (nine kills), Tabitha Meeks (eight kills) and Maria Concheck (seven kills) helped balance the scoring.

Sydney Trathen recorded a match-high 29 assists for Edinboro while Katie Felix notched 15.  Maycock and Haley Marett combined for 36 of the Fighting Scots' 52 digs to lead the defensive effort while Trathen chipped in at the net with a match-best four block assists.

Daemen got a match-best 14 kills from freshman Jenna Reeser (Amherst, N.Y./Sweet Home), which matched a career-high, and 11 from senior Lindsey Nowak (West Seneca, N.Y./Immaculata).  Nowak has now reached double-figure kills in 13 of the team's 19 matches this year, while Reeser hit the 10-kill plateau for the fourth time in her last nine outings.

Freshman Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) had 23 assists while senior Chelsea Turcer (Alexander, N.Y./Alexander Central) added a season-high 18.

Freshman Paige Recore (Pennelville, N.Y./John C. Birdlebough) added a career-best 14 digs to the Wildcat cause, albeit in a losing effort.

Both teams hammered down 48 kills in the match, but Edinboro did so more effectively, attacking at a .258 clip.  The Wildcats were forced into 25 attack errors, resulting in an attack percentage of .170.

Daemen hosts New York Institute of Technology (Saturday, Oct. 11; 11 a.m.) and Long Island University Post (Sunday, Oct. 12; 11 a.m.) this weekend as the Wildcats return to East Coast Conference play.
