Strong Second Half Lifts Dowling Past Wildcats

Stoddard Leads Daemen With 16 Points

Dowling (10-13, 9-9 ECC) 28-45—73
Daemen (7-18, 4-15 ECC)  29-22—51

AMHERST, N.Y. – Senior Rekik Worku (Wynnewood, Pa.) totaled 15 points and six assists and classmate Julia Koppl (Innsbrook, Austria) added 12 points and 18 rebounds to lead Dowling College to a 73-51 victory over Daemen College here tonight in East Coast Conference women's basketball action.

Dowling snapped a three-game losing streak and improved to 10-13 overall and 9-9 in the ECC. Daemen dropped to 7-18 overall and 4-15 in the league.

Senior Lindsay Stoddard (Limestone, N.Y./Allegany-Limestone) paced the Wildats with 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists. She has now totaled 471 career assists and now stands just three helpers shy moving into fourth place in career assists at Daemen. Sophomore Raeann Stilwell (Cheektowaga, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) drilled four three-pointers and scored 14 points for the Wildcats. Stilwell's four triples gives her 73 for the season and leaves her three shy of setting a new school-record for three-pointers made in a season. Freshman Natalie Galus (Hamburg, N.Y./Frontier) added eight points, four rebounds and three blocks.

Four players scored in double figures for the Golden Lions. Sophomore Krstina Surlan (Novi Grad, Bosnia) scored a team-high 16 points off the bench, while junior Kristen McMahon (Patchogue, N.Y.) added 11 points and five rebounds.

Daemen held a 29-28 lead at the break, but Dowling opened the second half with an 8-2 spurt and the Golden Lions later took a 47-34 lead after Surlan hit a three-pointer from the corner with 12:14 to play. The visitors extended their lead to 19-points, 56-37, after Surlan scored with 9:44 left to play. Daemen answered with a three-pointer by Stilwell, but Dowling outscored the Wildcats 10-5 over the next three minutes to secure the win. A bucket Worku with 5:26 left capped the spurt and gave the Golden Lions a 66-45 lead. Daemen came no closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

A tightly played first half featured five ties and seven lead changes. Dowling took the largest lead of the half, 17-8, after Surlan drained a three-pointer with 12:23 left before intermission. Daemen answered with a three-pointer from the top of the key by Galus and later took a 23-20 lead after Stilwell drained a triple from the corner with 6:04 left before the break. The lead changed hands six times over the final 2:18 of the half and Daemen took a 29-28 lead into intermission when Stoddard drove the length of the court and banked home a shot just before the halftime buzzer.

Dowling shot 54-percent (19-35) in the second half and finished 29-for-66 (44%) from the field overall. Daemen connected on just 29-percent (9-31) shots in the second half and went 21-for-64 (33%) from the field overall.
