AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team suffered its third-straight defeat today, falling to visiting University of the District of Columbia 2-0 in East Coast Conference action on a brisk afternoon at Dimp Wagner Stadium.
With the loss, Daemen drops to 2-9-1 overall and 0-5-1 in ECC play. Â UDC picked up its third league victory of the season (3-4-0) while improving to 5-8-1 overall. Â It marked the Firebirds' first win in Amherst since the all-time series began when Daemen joined the ECC in 2013. Â The team played to a 2-2 tie after 110 minutes back on October 26, 2013 in UDC's only other trip to Western New York.
Both teams generated numerous chances throughout the contest, but it was UDC's Maurice Schwab who put the guests on the board at the 39:01 mark. Â Schwab carried the ball up the right side, taking it tight to the endline before striking a high shot from an improbably angle, but the ball found its way under the crossbar and inside the far post to put the Firebirds ahead, 1-0. Â It was Schwab's fourth tally of the season.
The teams would go to halftime with UDC leading by one. Â The Firebirds outshot Daemen 12-4 in the opening frame.
Elio Hernandez would put UDC ahead by two at the 51:52 mark. Â A pass from the right side of the box by Kevin Ortez was touched in the center by Mehdi Badache on to the streaking Hernandez who put a hard shot inside the near post.
Daemen would get some opportunities to cut the deficit in half with shots on goal from
Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport),
Logan Podrebarac (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University) and
Ryan Haines (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster), but all were turned aside by UDC goalkeeper Louis Connor, an honorable mention All-ECC pick last season, who made five saves in all today to record his second shutout of the season.
Daemen got a real spark today from Haines who came off the bench and led the team with four shot attempts, placing two on frame.
Freshman goalkeeper
Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) did his best to keep the Wildcats in it, making four saves, albeit in a losing effort.
The second half was marred by chippy play from both teams with four yellow cards being doled in the period, two to each team.
Daemen returns to ECC play next Friday, October 23 when they visit N.Y. Institute of Technology.
