Men's Soccer Battles Roberts Wesleyan To 3-3 Draw

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Tight contests have become the norm in the men's soccer series between Daemen College and Roberts Wesleyan College, and the two former American Mideast Conference rivals, now members of the East Coast Conference, displayed more of the same tonight, battling for 110 minutes to a 3-3 draw at RWC Stadium.

For the fourth-straight meeting, the Wildcats and Redhawks needed to go past the 90-regulation minutes to decide things, coming away with the first draw in those four outings.  The result tonight moves Daemen to 2-6-1 overall, and 0-2-1 in ECC play, while RWC moves to 4-3-2 overall, and 2-1-1 in the league.

In a first half that saw only four shots combined, RWC took a 1-0 lead on Michael McGinnis' goal at the 38:36 mark.  The teams would go to the halftime intermission with the score that way.

That's when a relatively quiet contest was broken wide open with a flurry of scoring in the first 25 minutes of the second half.  It started when RWC's Taiwo Aderounmu netted his first of two goals on the night.  Aderounmu took a pass from Daniel Maxwell and put the hosts ahead by two at the 50:42 mark.

But, Daemen came right back, getting back-to-back goals from freshman Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).  Tracy cut the deficit in half at the 53:59 mark, with an unassisted tally.  At 56:02, another unassisted goal for Tracy, his team-leading fifth of the season, knotted the score at two-apiece.  For Tracy, it marks his second multi-goal game of the season.

Aderounmu added his own unassisted marker, this one at the 63:35 mark, to put the Redhawks back in front, 3-2.

Then, Daemen junior Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) netted his third goal of the season, tying the score once again, 3-3, at the 67:45 mark.  Reid continues to be a thorn in the side of the Redhawks with three goals in four career meetings, including two of the "golden goal" variety to deliver overtime wins.

But, that flurry of scoring was all she wrote for this one.  Both teams generated chances in the extra sessions but couldn't put one away.

Daemen played down a man after redshirt-freshman Jeremy Nand (Toronto, Ont./University of Charleston) was sent off with a red card at the 88:55 mark.

Freshman goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) made seven saves and earned his first career draw.  RWC split time in goal between starter Michael Scavone and John Ciavaglia.  Scavone was lifted after Tracy's second goal, and Ciavaglia went on to make a pair of saves to help force the tie.

The result today marked Daemen's first tie since battling University of the District of Columbia to a 2-2 draw at home back on October 26, 2013.

Daemen is idle until hosting Queens College for a 3:30 p.m Saturday matinee on October 10 in another East Coast Conference matchup.
