AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's basketball team raced to a 102-95 exhibition win tonight over visiting Brock University before a packed house at Lumsden Gymnasium in the Wildcats' first outing of the season.
Senior guard/forward
Torrence Dyck (Rochester, N.Y./San Jacinto College) and junior forward
Arif Mehmetaj (Jamaica, N.Y./SUNY Delhi) led seven double-figure scorers for Daemen as both put forth impressive efforts as they returned to the lineup. Â Both players had their 2014-15 season shortened due to injuries. Â Dyck shot 11-of-19 from the field, and 2-of-5 from three-point range tonight, pumping in a game-high 24 points while Mehmetaj scored 11 of his 15 points in the opening frame.
After trailing 48-46 at the half, Daemen burst out of the gates in the second, going on an 18-6 run to open up a 10-point lead (65-54). Â The run was exclimated by a pair of dunks from Dyck, the first putting Daemen ahead 54-52, and the second coming on an alley-oop feed from senior guard
Supreme Hannah (Rochester, N.Y./Eastridge), one of his six assists in the ballgame. Â
After a brief respite on a Brock three-pointer by Zachery Angelini which cut the lead to seven (64-57), Daemen extended the lead to as many as 19 points, leading 91-72 at the 6:21 mark following a trifecta from junior
Jesse Lalka (Tonawanda, N.Y./Tonawanda).
Brock wouldn't go away, however, chipping away with a 15-4 spurt of their own covering nearly three minutes as the game got down to crunch time. Â But, a
Ryan Grandits (Kenmore, N.Y./Medaille College) layup off a nice feed from Mehmetaj at the 2:59 mark re-established a 10-point gap (97-87) and Daemen went on to nail 3-of-4 free throws down the stretch to seal the deal.
Grandits tossed in 15 points, connecting on 4-of-5 field goal attempts and 7-of-8 from the chairty stripe in his Daemen debut. Â The game was a reunion of sorts for the 6-foot-5 forward who played his first three collegiate seasons at Medaille, two of which were under the tutelage of Daemen bench boss
Mike MacDonald, now in his second season running the show on Main Street.
Hannah added 13 points to go with his solid passing, while the Wildcats got 10 points from his backcourt mate,
Jaleo Wilkes (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Polk State College). Â Sophomore
Nick Petrucelli (Hicksville, N.Y./Thomasville Prep) and junior
Alex Borges (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) came off the bench to split 20 points between them, accounting for all but five of the Wildcats' bench points.
Johneil Simpson led a quartet of 20-point scorers for Brock with a team-high 22, while adding six boards. Â Dani Elgadi went 9-for-13 from the floor as part of a 21-point effort, matched by Ryan Bennett who canned 5-of-8 from long range. Â Angelini chipped in 20 points and no other Badger managed more than five.
Brock, a Canadian team with 13 games under their belt already this season, used blistering shooting in the first half to open up its two-point lead at intermission, shooting 56-percent from the field, including 8-for-11 from three-point range. Â The Badgers couldn't find the distance in the second half, connecting on just 4-of-13 attempts from behind the arc. Â Complicating matters for Brock was the 24 turnovers that the Wildcat defense forced.
After shooting 42-percent in the opening frame, Daemen went on to shoot 22-for-36 (61-percent) in the second, while also canning 21-of-26 freebies (81-percent) in the game.
Before tipping it up for real on November 13 versus Wilmington University, the Wildcats continue their exhibition schedule across town against NCAA Division I University at Buffalo on Friday, November 6. Â That one tips off at 9 p.m. in Alumni Arena as Daemen matches up with the defending Mid-American Conference champs.
