Women's Soccer Falls In Season Finale To Nationally-Ranked Bridgeport

Seniors Griffin and Lipinoga Honored In Pre-Game Ceremony

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's soccer team hung tough with nationally-ranked University of Bridgeport, before giving way in the latter stages of today's season finale, falling 4-0 in an East Coast Conference macthup held at a breezy Dimp Wagner Stadium.

With the loss, just Daemen's second in their last six outings, the Wildcats end their season at 7-10-1 overall, and 4-5-0 in ECC play for a fifth-place finish in the conference standings.  UB, the top-ranked team in the East Region, and the No. 4 ranked team in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Division II national poll, closeout an unbeaten ECC schedule (8-0-1) while improving to 16-1-1 overall, clinching the ECC regular season championship and the top seed in next week's ECC Tournament.

UB controlled possession throughout the contest, launching 31 shots at the Daemen goal and placing 12 on frame.  Nonetheless, Daemen hung in there, surrendering just one goal over the first 60 minutes of the game.  That score came early as freshman sensation Jess Laszlo put the guests on the board at the 4:48 mark, taking a feed in the center of the box from Flo Gamby and finishing her shot inside the left post.

Daemen generated a nice rush later in the half, resulting in a hard shot by sophomore striker Alex Juliano (Hamburg, N.Y./Nardin), but it was turned aside by UB goalkeeper Jennifer Wendelius.

Laszlo would strike again at the 62:13 mark, finding the ball amidst a scrum in front of the goal and sending a shot to the back of the net.  It was the 18th goal of the season for the rookie, tying her with Long Island University Post's Susanne Vistnes for the league's goal-scoring title this season.

Trailing by two, Daemen goalkeeper Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) came up big, stopping back-to-back breakaways, one by Laszlo and the second by Gamby.  O'Leary went on to match her season-high with eight saves in the game.

Later in the half, UB went ahead by three at the 78:59 mark, getting a goal from Carolina Rico.  Hanne Neby picked up an assist on the play.

Daemen narrowly missed a chance to get on the board shortly thereafter.  A free kick from sophomore back Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) found the head of Andrea D'Sa (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham), but D'Sa's attempt sailed just wide.  The freshman midfielder was trying for her second goal in as many games after netting the game-winner in Daemen's 4-3 defeat of Dowling College here on Friday.

UB would go on to add a goal at the 84:02 mark from Nicole Greenwald to provide the final margin.

The game today marked the final competition in the careers of Daemen seniors Meghan Lipinoga (North Tonawanda, N.Y./Canisius College) and Ashley Griffin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park).  Lipinoga, a 5-foot-4 back, made her 78th career appearance and 71st career start today, concluding her career with 24 total points (10 goals, 4 assists).  Griffin, a 5-foot-4 midfielder, made her 63rd career and appearanced and 36th career start today, concluding her career with eight total points (2 goals, 4 assists).  Both were honored in a pre-game ceremony today.
