AMHERST, N.Y. - Daemen College men's basketball player
Jay Sarkis (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena) has been named the East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week for games played November 23-29. The official announcement came via the ECC's
weekly men's basketball report released from conference headquarters this afternoon in Central Islip, N.Y.
Sarkis, a 6-foot-1 freshman guard, recorded his first game of double-figure scoring, coming off the bench to post 11 points in
Daemen's 75-69 loss to Mercyhurst University last Tuesday, November 24. In a back-and-forth affair that saw the two teams combine for 18 lead changes, Sarkis' back-to-back three-pointers helped Daemen establish its largest lead of the game at 57-50 with 8:29 to play. Sarkis canned 3-of-4 three-point attempts in the game, and converted both of his free throw opportunities while seeing 15 minutes of action, albeit in defeat to favorites in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West Division.
With today's announcement, Sarkis becomes the first men's basketball player from Daemen to garner ECC Rookie of the Week honors since the Wildcats joined the league in 2013-14.
Through the first three games of his career, Sarkis is averaging 5.3 points per game while seeing 9.0 minutes per outing. He's connected on 5-of-6 field goal attempts, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.
Sarkis and his Wildcat teammates hit the road to
take on Slippery Rock University Tuesday night in another non-conference game as Daemen (1-2) looks to even its overall record this season.
