Men's Soccer Tripped Up By Saint Rose

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback today at the hands of College of Saint Rose on a cool, rainy and blustery afternoon at Dimp Wagner Stadium.

With the loss, Daemen falls to 1-3-0 on the season while the Golden Knights (1-1-0) jump into the win column for the first time this season.

Daemen, playing its second game in less than 24 hours, found themselves coming from behind for almost the entire game.  Joshua Hanif put the Golden Knights on top early in the game, striking a hard shot from the right wing that found its way inside the far post at the 5:06 mark of the contest.  Striker Romaine Williamson received a pass via throw-in and tapped a feed to Hanif who did the rest.

Despite the early goal, Daemen possessed the ball well in the opening frame and held a 3-2 edge in shots, and a 6-0 lead in corner kicks at the break.

The tide turned in the second half, however, beginning with the Golden Knights' second tally of the game.  Williamson took a free kick from straight on and about 20 yards out after the Wildcats were whistled for a foul.  His shot found its way around the Daemen wall and inside the right post to give Saint Rose a 2-0 lead.

Saint Rose out-shot Daemen 9-1 in the second half, and nearly evened the corner kicks by attempting four in the period to Daemen's zero.

The Wildcats got three shots on goal in game, all of which were turned away by Saint Rose goalkeeper Colan Balkwell.  Jeremy Nand (Toronto, Ont./University of Charleston) and Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) registered the shots on goal for Daemen with the freshman Tracy picking up two.

Freshman goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) went the distance between the pipes for Daemen for the fourth-straight game, making three saves.

The win for Saint Rose avenged a 2-1 loss to Daemen in last season's meeting in Albany back on September 6, 2014.  Nick Sammarco (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) Cole Beale (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) did the damage for Daemen in that one, netting second-half goals to erase a 1-0 halftime deficit.

Daemen returns to non-conference action when they visit Gannon University this coming Tuesday, September 15 for a 7 p.m. tilt under the Erie, Pa. night sky.  For continuing coverage of the Daemen men's soccer team throughout the season, follow @DaemenAthletics and @DaemenMSOC on Twitter.
