MANSFIELD, Pa. - The Daemen College women's soccer team had no answer for Delaney Meadows of Mansfield University, falling today 3-1 in a non-conference game at the MU Soccer Field with Meadows netting a hat-trick in the Mounties' victory.
With the loss, Daemen (0-4-1) is still in seach of its first win of the season, while MU crossed that item of its to-do list, improving to 1-3-0 in 2015.
Meadows scored just 47 seconds into the contest to put the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference-affiliated Mounties ahead early. Â She took a through-ball from Kersten O'Brien and beat Daemen goalkeeper
Meaghan O'Leary (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) to the left side.
Just moments later, at the 5:14 mark, Meadows struck again, touching a crossing feed from Kelsey Chapman to the back of the net, putting the Mounties ahead 2-0.
But, Daemen would strike back quickly as sophomore forward
Stephanie Zurales (Woodridge, Ill./Downers Grove South) netted her second goal of the season to cut the deficit to one. Â Zurales' goal came unassisted at the 7:08 mark on a shot to the upper right corner of the goal from the left side of the box. Â With the goal, Zurales now has points in three of Daemen's five games this season, and in five of her last seven games played dating back to last season.
After the early flurry of goals, play went scoreless over the next 30-plus minutes until Meadows did more damage, engineering her third marker of the half at the 39:51 mark. Â She took a pass from the midfield off the foot of Nikki Ortiz and finished the play to re-establish the Mounties' two-goal edge. Â For Meadows, it was her seventh goal of the season and her second-straight hat-trick, having pulled off the feat on September 12 in MU's 7-4 loss to PSAC rival Indiana University (Pa.).
From there, MU went into a defensive shell and Daemen possessed well throughout the second half. Â The Wildcats generated 14 shot attempts in the frame, compared to just four for the hosts. Â For the game, Daemen held a 20-16 lead in shots on goal, but the Mounties were more efficient with 10 shots on goal to Daemen's eight.
Rachel Fox made seven saves for the Mounties to pick up the win between the pipes. Â O'Leary turned away seven Mountie attempts for the Wildcats.
Daemen closes a busy week with non-league road clashes at Washington Adventist University (Saturday, September 19, 8 p.m.) and Lincoln University (Sunday, September 20, 12 p.m.). Â
