ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Daemen College volleyball team just never got going this morning, suffering a 3-0 loss (13-25, 17-25, 14-25) to Quincy University in third-round action at the Grand Valley State University Laker Riverfront Classic.
The loss drops Daemen to 1-2 overall this season. Â The Wildcats took a split of yesterday's matches,
falling to Lock Haven University before rebounding with a
four-set defeat of Bemidji State University. Â Quincy (1-2 overall), a member of the Great Lakes Valley Conference, shrugged off a pair of losses yesterday to pick up their first win of the season.
Gianna Lincoln paced the victors, posting a match-high nine kills while adding a team-best 13 digs. Â Bekah Raebel chipped in with seven kills as Quincy hit .264 in the match, totaling 31 kills with just eight errors in 87 attack attempts.
Freshman outside hitter
Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) led Daemen with seven kills. Â Her sister, junior
Amber Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster), and senior
Ye Wang (Beijing, China/Hachioji Jissen) added five kills apiece.
Sophomore setter
Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) notched her first double-double of the season, contributing 22 assists and a career-high-matching 10 digs in a losing effort. Â Freshman libero
Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y./Eden) recorded a match-high 16 digs to lead the Wildcat defense.
The Hawks jumped out to a 12-2 lead in the opening set, establishing control of the match right from the outset. Â Daemen got no closer than eight points the remainder of the set as Quincy cruised to a 1-0 lead in sets.
Daemen trailed 5-4 early in the second set before Quincy rattled off four-straight points to extend the lead to five (9-4). Â The Hawks went on to lead 13-7 following back-to-back Daemen attack errors, and maintained at least a six-point cushion for the remainder of the set. Â The Hawks' largest lead ballooned to nine on three ocassions before closing out the set at 25-17.
The third set played out similarly as an 11-8 Quincy lead quickly turned into a 10-point bulge (19-9) when the Hawks ran off eight of the next nine points. Â Two kills by Lincoln and two from Raebel bookended the run. Â Lincoln would go on to end the match with her final kill.
Daemen will look to regroup before its 2 p.m. match versus Concordia University (Ore.) in its final action of the tournament.
