Daemen Downs LIU Post In Straight Sets

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team swept LIU Post in straight sets this afternoon in East Coast Conference play at Lumsden Gymnasium.  The Wildcats won 25-13, 28-26, and 25-21, they improved to 9-6 overall and 3-1 in the conference.

The Pioneers dropped to 3-9 overall and 0-3 in the league.  Today's match marked the seventh time these two teams have faced off; LIU Post leads the series 4-3.

The Pioneers were led by Sophomore outside hitter Rachel Londot (Utica, Ohio), she had eight kills, two service aces and six digs for an all-around, steady performance.  Indira Rojas (Coama, Puerto Rico) paced the Post defense with 19 kills, good for a match-high.  Kassie Akouri-Tejedor dished out 17 assists in the losing effort.

The Wildcats ousted LIU in nearly every statistical category in today's win.  Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lancaster) had another double-double performance with 17 kills and 11 digs.  Junior Rachel Stephenson (Hamburg, N.Y. / Frontier) added 11 digs, good for a match-high .556 hitting percentage.  Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden) had a stellar showing, registering seven kills for the third-straight match and added three blocks.  Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y. / St. Mary's of Lanaster) continued to shine at the setting position, dishing out 41 assists.  Daemen's steady defense was paced by sophomore Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y. / Eden), she posted a team-high 17 digs.

Daemen jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the opening set.  LIU Post pulled within one, 5-4, but a 9-2 Daemen run, that included four kills by Ashley Drzymala staked the Wildcats to a 14-6 lead it would not relinquish.  The Pioneers scored three consecutive points on the serve of Taryn McCullouch, but it would not be enough to yield the Daemen momentum.  The Wildcats scored the final four points of the set and Meghan Ballou put down a kill to win 25-13.

The teams traded points to open the second set and found themselves tied 9-9.  Daemen scored three-consecutive points that included a big block by Bailey Dolegowski and Meghan Ballou for the go-ahead advantage.  The Pioneers answered back with a kill from Rachel Londot to level the score once again at 14.  The two teams continued to battle back and forth, evening the score five more times.  Two consecutive Wildcat kills resulted in a slim two-point lead, however LIU rebounded with a 3-1 run to steal the lead 24-23.  Rachel Stephenson strategically placed the ball, beating the Pioneer defense to earn the 26-25 advantage.  The Wildcats would push two points to collect the 28-26 victory.

The third set started off in similar see-saw fashion with the teams exchanging points once again.  Post broke the 6-6 tie with a service ace, followed by a commanding block to take the lead 8-6.  The Pioneers capitalized on Daemen errors and nailed down three consecutive kills to build their lead 16-11.  The Wildcats responded with a 3-0 run on the serve of junior Alicia Contreras to narrow the gap 13-16.  The Wildcats regained the lead 19-18, which included three straight kills from the hard-swinging sophomore, Ashley Dryzmala.  Daemen put together a 6-3 run to close out the set and match 25-21.

The Wildcats host ECC rival Roberts Wesleyan October 4, at Lumsden Gymnasium.  The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening.
