Early Tally Lifts Purple Knights Past Wildcats

Goal at 1:41 Is The Difference As The Wildcats Close Season With Loss

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — The Daemen College men's soccer team closed out its 2016 season with a 1-0 loss to the University of Bridgeport in East Coast Conference action here this morning.

The host Purple Knights posted their second-straight victory and improved to 2-10-2 overall and 2-3-2 in the ECC. Daemen finishes at 2-15-0 overall and 0-9-0 in the league.

Bridgeport scored what would prove to be the game-winner on the first shot of the game just 1:41 into the contest, as freshman midfielder Erlend Skagestad (Mjoendalen, Norway) scored off a feed feed from senior forward Luis Fajardo (Danbury, Conn.). It marked the first goal of the year for Skagestad.

Daemen fired five shots at the Bridgeport net in the first 23 minutes of the game, but the Wildcats managed just one shot the rest of the half and the hosts took a 1-0 lead into the break.

Daemen pressured the Bridgeport net early in the second half, firing three shots in the first 12 minutes of the half, but once again the Daemen offense struggled to generate scoring opportunities down the stretch and did not record a shot the rest of the half.

Bridgeport posted an 8-6 edge in total shots during the first half and the Purple Knights finished with a 14-9 edge in shots overall. The hosts also held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Freshman Steve Geffert (North Rose, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) went the distance in net for Daemem and was credited with one save. Senior Fabio Junior (Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) made three saves for Bridgeport en rote to his first shutout of the year.
