Daemen Falls In Season Finale

Wildcats End Season At 4-10-2

ERIE, Pa. - Two Mercyhurst University goals scored early in each period spelled doom for Daemen College which fell 2-0 in non-conference women's soccer action today at the Mercyhurst Soccer Field.

The game marked the conclusion of Daemen's 2016 season, ending the year at 4-10-2 overall.  Mercyhurst, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, picked up just their second win since October 5.  The Lakers, who opened the season with six wins in their first 10 outings (6-3-1), improved to 8-7-2 overall.

The Wildcats were seeking their second straight win against a PSAC opponent.  Daemen snapped a 14-game drought (0-12-2) that dated back to 2002 against PSAC opponents with their 3-1 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown earlier this month.  But, Mercyhurst stayed unbeaten (4-0-0) in the all-time series with Daemen which began in 2007.

Graduate student Anja Korte (Wietmarchen, Germany) put the hosts on the board just 6:39 into the contest, scoring her first goal of the season.  Korte took a pass from senior forward Rebekah Craig (Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland) and blasted a shot to the back of the net from approximately 24 yards out.

Mercyhurst took the 1-0 lead into halftime after out-shooting the Wildcats by a slim 6-4 margin in the period.  Daemen's lone shot on goal came before the Korte goal off the foot of redshirt-sophomore midfielder Sarah Britton (Syracuse, N.Y./East Syracuse-Minoa).

When play resumed, freshman forward Maya Bauer (Westlake, Ohio) got loose on a breakaway for the Lakers, and scored the third marker of her rookie campaign less than seven minutes into the period.

That's all the cushion the Lakers would need as they went on to control the pace of play, out-shooting Daemen 10-3 in the period.  Daemen's second-half shot attempts came from freshman Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South), junior Alexis Ruggiero (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) and redshirt-senior Alexis Koral (Williamsville, N.Y./William Smith College).  Koral, playing in her career finale, led Daemen with three shots in the contest.

The game also marked the career conclusion for Daemen's Kelly DuVall (Addison, N.Y./Addison).  DuVall was joined by Boyar and sophomore Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y./Clarence) as the only players to start all 16 games this season.

MU's Kristen Koch (Fairport, N.Y.) needed to make just the one save to post her seventh shutout of the season.  Her counterpart, Daemen's Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) made four saves, finishing the season with 103 - the first 100-save season for a Daemen goalie during the eight-year tenure of head coach Dan Dolan.

With the season ending today, Boyar officially becomes the first Daemen freshman to lead the team in goals and points since Alicia Vasiloff did so with eight goals and 16 points in 2008.  Boyar's six goals and 16 points are the most for a Daemen freshman since Kim Obermeier (Depew, N.Y./Depew) scored nine times and posted 21 points in 2012.
