Donahue, Trabert, Kress Pace Wildcats' All-ECC Honorees

AMHERST, N.Y. - Long distance runner Mackenzie Donahue (East Aurora, N.Y./East Aurora) of the Daemen College women's indoor track and field team was named to the first-team All-East Coast Conference in two events, and was joined by teammates Amy Trabert (Amherst, N.Y./Amherst) and Kyra Kress (Wayland, N.Y./Alfred-Almond Central) who also earned first-team all-league honors for their respective performances the conference championship meet held on February 26 at the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, N.Y.  The trio led Daemen to a fourth place finish in the team standings, representing the Wildcats' best collective performance at conference championship meet since joining the ECC several seasons ago.

Donahue recorded two ECC Championship records and placed first in both the 3,000 meter run and the 5,000 meter run to earn first-team All-ECC honors in both events.  She posted a time of 10:18.72 in the 3,000 meters, just three seconds off her school-record time which she set earlier this season at the Marc Deneault Invitational on February 20.  She followed that up with a time of 17:30.18 in the 5,000 meters, smashing the previous championship record of 17:44.88 set by Indira Avilla of Queens College in 2013.  She has already been named an All-Region honoree in both events by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association in addition to this all-conference honor.

Trabert came in second behind Donahue in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18:09.74 to pick up her initial first-team all-league honor during the indoor season.  She added a third place finish in the 3,000 meter run, and was named second-team All-ECC in that event.

Kress finished as the runner up in the pole vault event to earn first-team All-ECC honors during her freshman campaign.  Kress matched her own school record by clearing 3.05 meters.

Daemen also picked up second-team all-league honors from Brittany Denton (Oakfield, N.Y./Oakfield-Alabama) and Ashley Cheff (Niagara Falls, N.Y./Niagara Falls) in individual events, while its distance medley team of Denton, Cheff, Brooke Nolan (Depew, N.Y./Depew) and Lindsey Wood (Newfield, N.Y./Newfield) did the same.  Denton finished fourth in the 1,000 meter run with a school-record time of 3:12.27, and Cheff likewise finished fourth in the 3,000 meter run, coming in with a time of 10:50.82.  The distance medley squad set a new team record with their time of 13:01.60 which was good for second place at the meet.

In addition to announcing its all-league honorees, the ECC also named Chelsea Hayward of Roberts Wesleyan College and Simone Grant of University of the District of Columbia as the Co-ECC Women's Indoor Track and Field Athletes of the Year.  Additionally, RWC head coach Merl McGinnis was dubbed the league's Coach of the Year after guiding the Redhawks to their second-straight conference championship.  A full list of All-ECC honorees is available at eccsports.org.
