Volleyball Rebounds To Capture Two Wins

AMHERST, N.Y. – The real storm worth watching Saturday was not the weather Buffalo experienced but The Daemen College women's volleyball team.  The Wildcats rebounded from two losses Friday to pick up consecutive wins against non-conference opponents Assumption College (25-22, 25-13, 25-19) and The College Of Saint Rose (20-25, 25-11, 25-23, 22-25, 15-9).

The results today drive Daemen to 5-3 on the season.

Against Assumption College, Daemen doubled the Greyhounds in total kills, aces, assists and digs with 44, 10, 42, and 40 respectively en route to a three-set sweep.   The Wildcat's defense restricted Assumption to a slim attack percentage of just 0.162.

First-year Sydney MacInnis (Superior, Colo./Fairfield) dished out a match-high 31 assists and notched seven digs in the opening match.  The hard-hitting trio of Ashley Drzymala (West Seneca, N.Y/St. Mary's of Lancaster), Courtney Bernard (Lancaster, Ohio), and Courtney Scanlan (Ellicotville, N.Y.) led the Daemen offense with 15, 12, and eight kills respectively.

Daemen's dominant defensive performance was paced by libero Jess Kranz (Depew, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster) and sophomore Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y./Eden), the pair accounted for 17 combined digs.

Assumption's Kiki Romanik(San Rafeal, Calif.), a junior outside hitter, led the Greyhounds with 15 assists, while Olivia Burke (Salem, N.H.) nailed down a team-high eight kills.

The Wildcats and Greyhounds began the first game with back and forth action, Assumption took the early lead off of Daemen errors.  Two consecutive kills from Scanlan, followed by a service ace from Amber Drzymala ( West Seneca, N.Y./St. Mary's of Lancaster), and capped off by a pair of kills from the younger Drzymala propelled the Wildcats to a 14-11 lead.  The Greyhounds crawled back within one-point on five different occasions (15-14, 19-18, 20-19, 22-21, 23-22), but Daemen remained sturdy in the triumph.

Daemen continued to build on their momentum in the second set after a colossal eight-point run resulted in an 18-6 lead.  Ashley Drzymala was the catalyst, serving three aces, along with the addition of three kills from Bernard to take control.  Burke recorded four kills in the Greyhounds losing effort, Daemen would end the second set with a dominating 25-13 victory.

The Wildcats closed out things in the third set, continuing to command the Greyhounds in aggressive fashion.  Two service aces by Kailey Ballou and a crucial kill from younger sister Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y/Eden) helped Daemen establish a 9-6 lead after trailing by two points.  Assumption remained within Wildcat reach capitalizing on Daemen errors, only trailing 23-19.   Amber Dryzmala ended both the set and match with two kills off of assists from MacInnis, Daemen won 25-19.

In the second game of the night the Wildcats won a thrilling five-set match over St. Rose.  Daemen now leads the all-time series against St. Rose 2-0, the Wildcats faced off against the Golden Knights last season September 19, winning in succeeding sets.  The Drzymala sisters each recorded double-doubles, Ashley had a match-high 20 kills.  Kranz led the Daemen defense with 15 digs and Amber Drzymala added 14 in the win.

Maryellen Devic (Orchard Park, N.Y.) had 7 kills in the opening set to lead the Golden Knights to a 25-20 victory.  The Wildcats were able to erase a five-point shortfall and take the 17-16 lead on a line-drive spike from veteran Amber Dryzmala.   However it wasn't enough to stay ahead, Daemen committed six mistakes in the last seven points resulting in the 25-20 St. Rose win.

Daemen battled back in the second set to an authoritative 25-11 overthrow of St. Rose.   The score remained close early after two consecutive kills by St. Rose captain Jennifer Gundrum (East Meadow, N.Y.), Daemen led 9-8.   Daemen used a 13-1 surge to turn the slight lead into an unconquerable 22-9 advantage.  Meghan Ballou had a kill and classmate Bailey Dolegowski (Marilla, N.Y./ St. Mary's of Lancaster) added a service ace to put an end to the set.

The third and fourth set kept the crowd at Lumsden Gymnasium on the edge of their seat through see-saw action, Daemen seized the third but St. Rose rebounded and stole the fourth-set.  The Golden Knights had a 23-20 lead, but Daemen would come from behind for the win.  Daemen jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the following fourth set, but it wasn't enough to hold off the mighty Greyhound stampede.  The win by St. Rose was highlighted with four Gundrum kills.

Daemen cruised to a striking 7-0 advantage in the deciding fifth set to pave way for the Daemen success.  The Golden Knights were able to close the gap within three points with Daemen ahead 11-7.  Ashley Drzymala capped off a successful day, notching the set and match point of the night for a final score of 15-9.

Sophomore middle blocker Courtney Bernard was named to the All-Tournament Team after her successful weekend.  She tallied 41 kills for a consistent .436 hitting percentage and added in six blocks in four matches.

The Wildcats travel to Le Moyne College on Wednesday, September 14 to continue non-conference action.  Daemen is on the road for three straight matches before returning to Lumsden Gymnasium September 20.
