Shawish Lifts Daemen Past D'Youville

Wildcats Earn First Win Of McColl Era

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Daemen College men's soccer player Ali Shawish (Lackawanna, N.Y./Lackawanna) picked an opportune time to notch his first career goal as the freshman forward's tally in the 59th minute led the Wildcats past home-standing D'Youville College today in non-conference action at Dobson Field.

With the win, Daemen snaps an 11-game slide dating back to last season, keeping their unblemished record in the all-time series vs. DYC intact (3-0).  The Wildcats' last win came at Dobson Field against DYC on September 22, 2015.  Senior Frank Poppolo's goal stood up in another 1-0 Daemen win in that one.  The Wildcats improved to 1-4-0 overall this season with the result today, as the Spartans, an NCAA Division III affiliate and member of the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference fell to 0-4-0.

After a scoreless opening frame, Shawish put the Wildcats on the board at the 58:36 mark.  He took a long feed from classmate Connor Essenburg (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and beat DYC net-minder Corey Sikora (Kenmore, N.Y.) with a shot from close range.  The Shawish goal snapped a goal-less drought that reached just over 200 minutes, dating back to Daemen's 2-1 double overtime loss vs. Ashland University on September 3.

The Shawish goal would stand up as the only marker needed to put down the Spartans as sophomore goalkeeper Justin Figler (Grand Island, N.Y./Grand Island) needed to make just one save to earn the second shutout of his career.

Daemen dominated possession in the game, ultimately out-shooting the Spartans 23-5 in the game.  That included an 11-0 edge in total shots in the opening frame.  Shawish's nine total shots and five shots on goal led the Wildcats who also got four shots apiece from Colin Edwards (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University) and Kyle Tracy (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).

Under constant duress, Sikora made 10 stops to keep the hosts within striking distance.

The win today was also Daemen's first under first-year head coach Bobby McColl.  McColl, who is in his fifth season overall as a collegiate head coach, was named the sixth head coach in team history after leading the women's team at Roberts Wesleyan College to an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament in 2015.

McColl and the Wildcats hope to carry the momentum of today's victory into their contest this Tuesday, September 13 as they host Gannon University at 1 p.m.
