For Communications Wildcats Battle To 1-1 Draw With Mansfield Wescott Makes 14 Saves, Boyar Nets Equalizer AMHERST, N.Y. - In their 2016 home opener, the Daemen College women's soccer team battled to a 1-1 (2OT) draw with Mansfield University in non-conference action this afternoon at Park School Field. After a scoreless first half, the visiting Mounties got on the board first, but Daemen's Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) netted the equalizer, and sophomore goalkeeper Jackie Wescott (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard South) ended up with a career-high 14 saves as the team's battled through two scoreless overtime periods to force the tie.  The result ended Daemen's two-game winning streak and it moves the Wildcats to 2-2-1 on the season.  The Wildcats are now 2-0-1 in their last three overtime games, dating back to last season.  Mansfield, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference, is left to continue looking for their first win of the season, moving to 0-3-1 overall. Daemen started out strong offensively, producing 10 of their 15 shots in opening period.  Mansfield matched the early production and ramped things up as the game went on, ending with 32 total shots, 20 of which came after halftime.  But, when it mattered most, the Daemen defense stiffened, allowing just one shot attempt in the two overtime periods. Sophomore forward Nicole Holborn (Kissimmee, Fla.) came off the bench to put the Mounties on the board at the 57:38 mark.  Following a foul on Daemen, junior midfielder Nikki Ortiz (Kennett Square, Pa.) took the ensuing free kick near the right sideline about 40 yards out, sending a long crossing feed to the rear post where Holborn got her head on it, knocking the ball past Wescott. Mansfield kept up the pressure, launching shot after shot.  But, the Wildcats evened things up on Boyar's first career goal.  She took the ball from the middle of the field and carried to the right wing where she sent a high, driving shot from outside the box over the head of MU goalkeeper Rachel Fox (Etters, Pa.) and inside the far post. Mansfield finished regulation with a flurry as it produced two corner kick opportunities in the final 25 seconds, but neither paid off.  For the game, the Mounties held an 11-4 edge in corner kicks. The first overtime session was rather uneventful.  MU's Alexis Bittel (Liverpool, N.Y.) registered the only shot attempt, but that was turned away by Wescott. The only two shots of the second overtime came from Daemen.  Freshman Jenny Yuhnke (Wyoming, N.Y./Pavilion Central) put one on frame in the 104th minute, but Fox was up to the task.  Boyar sent one wide moments later.  It was her team-leading sixth shot of the game as her speed gave the MU defense fits at times. Likewise, Daemen had its hands full with MU sophomore Delaney Meadows (Harrisburg, Pa.), the 2015 PSAC Rookie of the Year.  Meadows registered 10 total shots and five shots on goal, but was held off the scoresheet.  Daemen head coach Dan Dolan, who registered just the fifth tie of his eight-year tenure today, was quick to credit the collective effort of defenders Rose Carboni (Endicott, N.Y./Union Endicott) and Monique Green (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) with the job they did shadowing the Mounties' explosive sophomore. Wescott's 14 saves are the most for a Daemen goalkeeper since former Wildcat Kathryn Haessner (Moravia, N.Y./Moravia) turned away 13 shots in a 3-0 loss to Long Island University Post on October 6, 2013. The tie today also snapped the Wildcats' three-game slide in the all-time series with MU.  The teams also battled to a 1-1 draw back on October 8, 2003, and Mansfield holds a 3-1-2 edge in the series. Next up for the Wildcats is their first East Coast Conference game of the season as Mercy College invades Amherst this Friday, September 16 for a 1 p.m. clash.
