AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team opened the East Coast Conference portion of the 2016 season with a 6-0 loss to visiting Mercy College at Park School Field today.
With the loss, Daemen falls to 1-6-0 overall. Â Mercy (4-0-1, 1-0-0 ECC) kept its overall record unblemished while picking up its first ECC victory of the season.
Freshman forward Maximiliano Rebolledo-Camus (Santiago, Chile) opened the scoring with his first tally of the season at the 14:55 mark. Â The Maverick greenhorn one-timed a crossing feed from senior back Gonzalo Prando (Jefferson Valley, N.Y.) to put the guests on the board.
Freshman midfielder Manuel Achondo (Santiago, Chile) added a goal and an assist before the end of the half. Â Achondo scored off a feed from redshirt-junior back Daniel Watson (Birmingham, England) in the 31st minute, and assisted on Mariglen Verjoni's (Cornwall, N.Y.) marker just eight minutes later.
The Mavericks added second-half goals from Ericson Penate (Reseda, Calif.), Haxhi Verjoni (Cornwall, N.Y.) and Carlos Rabanal (New Rochelle, N.Y.).
Mercy outshot Daemen 29-6 in the game, placing 12 shots on frame. Â Freshman
Steve Geffert (North Rose, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott) made his second straight start between the pipes for Daemen, finishing with six saves.
At the other end, Mercy junior Kwantarian Van der Lara (Conway, Ark.) went the distance and made two saves to earn the shutout. Â Daemen's shots on goal came from senior
Colin Edwards (Burlington, Ont./Tiffin University) and freshman
Connor Essenburg (Wolcott, N.Y./North Rose-Wolcott).
Daemen looks to regroup before hosting St. Thomas Aquinas College in another ECC matchup this Sunday, Sept. 18.
