Wildcats Even Record With Non-League Win Over Oswego State

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's tennis team evened its record to 5-5 following a 5-4 win over Oswego State University today in a non-conference match played at Ellicott Tennis Courts on the campus of the University at Buffalo.

Oswego, a NCAA Division III member of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), dropped to 3-6. Daemen, a NCAA Division II member of the East Coast Conference, is now 24-13 all-time against NCAA Division III opponents.

The Wildcats opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches, and secured the win by taking the first three singles matches in straight sets.

Senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) and junior Jessica Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) teamed up at No. 1 doubles for the first time this season and rolled to an 8-1 win over graduate student Alli Ullrich (St. Louis, Mo.) and senior Jill Travis (Clifton Park, N.Y.). The Wildcats also got an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles, as freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) teamed up to beat freshman Bridget Bender (Eden, N.Y.) and junior Lorrayne Brach (Savannah, N.Y.).

The Wildcats were without the services of their top two players as they entered singles play with a 2-1 lead, as Yuen and fellow rookie Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sit, Brazil) sat out the  singles competition.

Stasiuk opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Ullrich at No. 1 singles. Ringler followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Travis at No. 2 singles, and Robins secured the win with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Bender at No. 3 singles. Stasiuk's win marked the team-leading ninth singles win of the year  for her, as she is now 9-5 overall and 7-3 in dual match play. Ringler improved to 6-5 overall in singles play, while Robins is now 6-6.

Junior Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg), sophomore MacKenzie Robbins (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent) and sophomore Alliya Foster (Bronx, N.Y./DeWitt Clinton) all suffered losses during singles play for the hosts.

Daemen returns to action Thursday (Oct. 5) when it hosts Houghton College in a non-league match.
