Women's Tennis Downs Houghton Highlanders

AMHERST, N.Y. – Freshmen Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.), Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.), and senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) all earned wins in both singles and doubles play to lead Daemen College to a 7-2 victory over Houghton College in a non-conference match played at Ellicott Tennis Courts on the campus of the University at Buffalo.

The victory was Daemen's second-straight win over a Division III institution, improving the Wildcats to 6-5 overall with a 3-2 conference record.  Today's contest marked the fifth-straight season that the Wildcats and Highlanders have met; Daemen has won all five meetings.  Houghton, an affiliate of the Empire 8 Conference, fell to 6-4 on the season.

Ringler and Yuen picked up their third win of the season as a pair to lead things off in first doubles.  They defeated Houghton's Tori Noller and Laura Jacuzzo, 8-1.

In second doubles, Stasiuk and Paschoalin teamed up on an 8-0 whitewash of Kaylee Jentsch and Jacquelyn Lewis as the Wildcats established a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Needing just three points to seal the victory, the Wildcats notched five.  Yuen, Paschoalin, Stasiuk and Ringler all won in straight sets, as did junior Jess Robbins (North Tonawanda, N.Y.).  Robbins defeated Katelyn Sylor 6-1, 6-1 in the fifth singles position.

Stasiuk's single victory gives her a team-high nine this season, while Yuen and Paschoalin have registered eight and seven respectively.

The Wildcats are back in action tomorrow evening, making the short trek to Niagara University to face off against the Division I Purple Eagles.
