For Communications Women's Soccer Falters Vs. Mercyhurst AMHERST, N.Y. - After starting the season with five consecutive wins in games decided by one goal, the Daemen College women's soccer dropped its second such decision in just the last four days, falling 2-1 today at the hands of visiting Mercyhurst University in a non-conference game played at Karrer Field. The loss sends Daemen's record to 6-5-1 this season. The Wildcats were coming off a 3-2 defeat against East Coast Conference-leading Mercy College this past Saturday, Oct. 7. Mercyhurst, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Sate Athletic Conference, improved to 1-0-1 in non-league games, and to 3-6-3 overall this season, snapping a four-game winless streak (0-3-1) with their first victory since Sept. 24. The Lakers got on the board first as Maia Russo took a through-ball from Emilie Bock and scored on a low shot that made its way inside the left post at the 10:02 mark. It marked the sixth time this season that Daemen has given up the first goal of a game (1-4-1 record in those games). Daemen evened things up in an unconventional manner a few minutes later. Streaking into the left side of the box, sophomore forward Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.) sent a crossing feed to the front of the goal where it was inadvertantly kicked over the goal line by a Mercyhurst defender at the 15:43 mark, resulting in a rare "own goal". From there, the game remained tied for over 40 minutes. Mercyhurst pulled back ahead at the 56:05 mark when Jinan Abdalah hopped on a rebound opportunity inside the six-yard box to net her second goal of the season. The initial shot attempt from Maya Fanazini was turned aside by Daemen goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.), but Abdalah won the race to the rebound. The Wildcats narrowly missed a game-tying chance just moments later as Boyar's hard driving shot in the 60th minute clanged off the post. Daemen put three shots on frame in the final 30 minutes - one each from Boyar, sophomore midfielder Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia) and redshirt junior midfielder Sarah Britton (Syracuse, N.Y.) - but all were stopped by MU net-minder Vilde Wold as part of her six-save performance. Flores turned away 10 Mercyhurst attempts in a hard luck losing effort for Daemen. The Wildcat freshman was making her first appearance since an 11-save performance in a 2-1 victory over Goldey-Beacom College on Sept. 26. The Lakers held a slim 17-14 advantage in total shot attempts, with 12 placed on frame compared to Daemen's seven. The Wildcats generated a 6-0 edge in corner kick opportunities, but couldn't cash in. Daemen returns to East Coast Conference action in the final game of their four-game homestand this Saturday, Oct. 14 with perennial powerhouse University of Bridgeport coming to Karrer Field. The game marks the final home game of the 2017 regular season for the Wildcats, and seniors Alex Juliano (Hamburg, N.Y.), Kalyn Compeau (Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. First kick Saturday is slated for 11 a.m.Print Friendly Version
