Men's Soccer Drops Wild One In Double Overtime

AMHERST, N.Y. - In an East Coast Conference men's soccer game that featured 50 combined fouls, two waved off goals, a waved off penalty kick, seven yellow cards and one red card, the University of Bridgeport emerged with a 4-3 win in double overtime over host Daemen College at Karrer Field this afternoon.

Abdoul Aremu scored the game-winning goal for UB, sending a high, driving shot just under the crossbar at the 106:35 mark. The Purple Knights took advantage of a Daemen foul in their own defensive third, using a quick re-start by Rafael Torres who sent a long pass down the middle of the field to a streaking Aremu, allowing him to get behind the Daemen defense.

The loss drops Daemen's overall record to 5-9 this season, and their ECC mark falls to 1-5. The Wildcats are now 3-5 this season in games that are decided by a single goal. Three of their five conference losses have been one-goal affairs, including the last two in a row.

The Purple Knights kept their postseason hopes alive by snapping a six-game drought (0-5-1) and securing their first win since Sept. 14. UB moved to 3-8-1 overall and to 2-4-1 in league play with the win.

Versatile freshman Noah Keem (Amherst, N.Y.) put Daemen on the board at the 16:44 mark as he pounced on a rebound opportunity inside the six-yard box. A free kick from Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) went to his countryman Victor Lanje (Helsingborg, Sweden) inside the box, but Lanje's attempt was thwarted by UB goalkeeper Juan Munoz. The rebound caromed to Keem who did the job of burying the game's first goal; Ringdahl Bohlin and Lanje both earned assists on the play.

But, Bridgeport came right back and took the lead with a pair of goals in less than a four-minute stretch before halftime. Moritz Klein netted both, first scoring on a free kick at the 31:33 mark, sending his shot through traffic and to the back of the net. Att he 35:19 mark, his header off a corner kick from Jay Abreu found its way inside the left post to give UB a 2-1 lead.

The game took a turn when UB's Lucas Santos was sent off at the 54:25 mark. He was issued a red card after a hard tackle in the midfield as he and Lanje battled for possession.

Just over four minutes later, Daemen knotted things up as Keem found classmate Finn Krueger (Neuried, Germany) who struck a hard shot from just inside the box to the back of the net.

Despite being down a man, the Purple Knights would forge ahead with Klein's third goal of the game at the 61:45 mark. Erlend Skagestad's free kick from just over midfield made its way to Klein in the middle of the box and he headed it home, giving UB a 3-2 lead with just under 30 minutes to play in regulation.

Daemen appeared to even things up twice on free kick opportunities of their own, but on both attempts the linesman's flag was up to indicate an offside infraction. The Wildcats also appeared to be awarded a penalty kick when Krueger was hauled down in the box, but after a conference of the officials, that too was waved off.

The Wildcats finally did draw even when freshman Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) sent a crossing feed from the right wing which was accepted by classmate Samuel Lockman (Luleaa, Sweden) near the left post. Lockman touched the ball down to his foot and hammered it into an open net at the 84:41 mark.

Daemen controlled play throughout the first overtime, and generated a trio of game-winning opportunities - one each by Krisitan Aadnoy (Gjerdrum, Norway), Krueger and Cupello. Munoz turned aside the Aadnoy and Krueger shots, and Cupello's sailed just wide.

The Bridgeport win came despite being outshot 24-13 in the game, including a 15-7 Daemen advantage after halftime. Munoz was credited with nine saves in the game. Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.) went the distance in goal for Daemen, and he made four saves.

Daemen, which entered today's contest as winners in three of their five outings, is off to The Big Apple next week (Wednesday, Oct. 18) to face league foe Queens College.
