Wildcats Cruise To Road Win At Caldwell

BOX SCORE

CALDWELL, N.J. - The Daemen College women's tennis team salvaged a split of their weekend road trip with a 7-2 win over host Caldwell University in non-conference action today at the CU Tennis Courts.

The Wildcats, who were coming off a 6-3 loss Saturday at St. Thomas Aquinas College, improved to 8-7 this season with today's win. It marks the first time that Daemen has reached the eight-win mark during the fall season, and puts them one shy of the team record for wins in a season which was set during last year's 9-15 campaign. The Wildcats have two matches remaining this fall and an entire spring schedule yet to play.

The win was also Daemen's third in as many seasons over Caldwell, an affiliate of the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference. The Cougars closed their fall season with today's match, falling to 3-9 overall.

Today's action opened with Daemen taking two of three points available from doubles action. Senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and freshman Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) won their No. 2 doubles match 8-2 over CU's Janis Jimenez and Shannon Donaldson. It was the third-straight win for Ringler and Paschoalin who were paired together for the first time just earlier this week in Daemen's 8-1 road win at Millersville University. In addition, junior Jessica Robins teamed with sophomore MacKenzie Robbins (Rome, N.Y.) to pick up an 8-2 win over Claudia Romano and Amy Tang in the No. 3 doubles position.

Caldwell avoided the doubles sweep with a competitive 8-6 victory by Valeria Otarola and Rebecca Ryan in the No. 1 position over Daemen's top pair of Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.).

Yuen and Stasiuk both bounced back by gaining points in singles play, helping Daemen go 5-1 in singles matches today. With the match already decided, Yuen won in an abbreviated pro set (8-4) in the No. 1 singles position over Otarola, while Stasiuk ousted Jimenez in straight sets (6-3, 6-3) in the No. 3 singles spot. The duo is tied for the team lead in singles wins with identical 12-7 records, placing them just two wins shy of the program record for singles wins in a season (14 set by Hayle Scanlan in 2016-17), and one win shy of the program record for singles wins by a freshman (13 set by Ringler in 2014-15).

Ringler, Robins and junior Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y.) all earned singles for Daemen in positions four through six, respectively. Ringler earned her 39th career singles win (second in team history) with a straight-sets defeat (6-1, 6-4) of Donaldson. The lone Daemen senior is now 9-7 in singles matches this season, eclipsing her win total from all of last season (she went 8-18), and pulling within one win of the second 10-win season of her career.

Robins, who recently moved into third place in team history for career singles wins, won the 30th singles match of her career with a 6-0, 6-0 defeat of Romano. She's now won three consecutive singles matches to improve to 10-7 this season. It's the second 10-win season of Robins' career and brings her within one victory of her career high which she set last season when she went 11-15.

Park earned her fourth singles win of the season, and her first since Sept. 30 vs. Alderson Broaddus University. She outplayed Tang 6-3, 6-2 to round out the Wildcats' singles winners today.

Daemen closes out the fall season with a pair of East Coast Conference matches at home next weekend. Sites and times are still to be determined, but the Wildcats play host to New York Institute of Technology (Friday, Oct. 20) and Long Island University Post (Saturday, Oct. 21).
