Men's Soccer Suffers Sixth One-Goal Defeat Of Season

PAINESVILLE, Ohio - Playing in their penultimate game of the 2017 season, the Daemen College men's soccer team suffered a 2-1 loss to Lake Erie College in non-conference action this afternoon at Jack Britt Memorial Stadium.

The loss dropped Daemen's overall record to 6-11 this season. The Wildcats are now 4-6 this season in games decided by a single goal. Head coach Bobby McColl's squad has already established the most wins of the team's NCAA Division II era, and they remain one shy of the program record for wins in a season set in 2005 and 2006.

Lake Erie, an affiliate of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, closed out their 2017 season at 5-12 overall following their win today.

Sophomore midfielder Javier Borreguero put the Storm on the board at the 25:53 mark with his seventh goal of the season. He took a feed from Ezekiel Ebenezer on the right side and scored with a shot to the lower right corner of the goal.

Daemen came right back and evened things up at the 29:59 mark as freshman midfielder Niklas Ringdahl Bohlin (Fjaras, Sweden) scored on a penalty kick. A yellow card was issued to Lake Erie's Colby Daigle after being whistled for a foul in the box resulting in the penalty kick opportunity which Ringdahl Bohlin cashed in for his third marker of the year.

Lake Erie forged ahead early in the second half as Ebenezer notched his seventh goal of the season. He took a pass from Ameer Saade and scored with a shot to the bottom left corner from 15 yards out at the 53:26 mark.

Daemen would go on to generate nine corner kicks and 15 shots in the second half, but none got past Lake Erie net-minder Tom John who made six of his nine saves in the period.

Daemen outshot the Storm 20-17 in the game, and had a 10-8 advantage in shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Anthony Cupello (Rochester, N.Y.) and redshirt senior forward Alex Reid (Lockport, N.Y.) played strong offensively, combining for nine total shots and five shots on goal.

The Wildcats, who were coming off a 4-1 loss to the University of the District of Columbia this past Saturday, entered the game with 35 goals on the season, second best among East Coast Conference teams. Daemen has now been held under two goals in back-to-back games for just the second time this season.

Mike D'Amato (Orchard Park, N.Y.) made his 10th consecutive start between the pipes for Daemen, and matched his career-high with six saves which he's done three times now this season.

Daemen wraps up its 2017 season this Saturday, Oct. 28 with an ECC road game at Molloy College.

GAME NOTES: All three of Ringdahl Bohlin's goals this season have come on penalty kicks...he's a perfect 3-for-3 in penalty kick situations...no other Daemen player has attempted a penality kick this season...Ringdahl Bohlin's goal gives him 11 points this season, becoming the fourth Daemen player (all freshmen) to reach double-figure points for the season...it's the first time Daemen has had four players with 10 or more points in a season since 2011 (Kyle Clifford: 34; Zakariah Hall: 24; Stephen Linderman & Juan Esguerra: 10)...of Daemen's 36 goals this season, 32 have been scored by freshmen...Daemen started nine freshmen again today as they've done (at least that many freshmen starters) in all 17 games this season...D'Amato ranks fifth in the ECC with 46 total saves this season...that's the most saves in a season for a Daemen goalkeeper since Justin Figler totaled 88 in 2015.
