Wildcats Split Weekend Tri-Match

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team earned a split of two home matches today, falling in non-conference action to American International in a five-set thriller (20-25, 25-20, 22-25, 25-22, 15-12) before ousting longtime rival Roberts Wesleyan 3-0 in an East Coast Conference match (25-17, 25-10, 25-14).

Today's results push Daemen's record to 11-12 overall and 7-3 in league play. The league win was important as the Wildcats maintain their grip on a two-way tie for third place in the ECC standings, just one game back of the first-place tie between Long Island University Post (23-4, 8-2 ECC) and Molloy College (19-5, 8-2 ECC).

The Wildcats' loss in the opening match of the day came in a rematch of last season's East Region Finals. Just like that one, the AIC Yellow Jackets emerged with a hard-fought victory. AIC, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, improved to 16-9 on the season with the win, fighting back from 1-0 and 2-1 deficits in sets.

Annie Boele notched 15 kills, while Jana Potic and Arianna Pena-Martinex split 26 kills to lead the AIC offensive attack. Junior setter Dolores Kopren, who was named to the All-Tournament Team in her last trip to Lumsden Gymnasium for the East Region Championships, contributed 50 assists in today's win.

Defensively, the Yellow Jackets were led by Mercy Rivera who totaled 25 digs. Boele (15 digs), Kopren (12 digs), Potic (11 digs) and C.J. Almaraz (11 digs) all notched double-figure digs as well.

Daemen got a career-high 20 kills from redshirt junior outside hitter Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y.) in a losing effort. Sophomore Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) registered 16 kills, while middle hitters Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania) and Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.) split 18 kills.

Senior setter Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y.) totaled a match-high 51 assists - her third 50+ assist match of the season.

Defensively, the Wildcats had four players reach double-figure digs, led by freshman Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) who totaled a career-best 32. Ballou (19), Scanlan (15) and McKrell (12) all contributed to earn double-doubles.

In the sweep over RWC, the Wildcats posted a .395 hitting percentage, their highest of the season thus far and held the Redhawks to a slim .025 attack percentage.

Apostol registered the lone double-digit kill performance, nailing down 10 and adding three blocks.  Ballou and Scanlan rounded out the Wildcat attack, notching eight and seven kills respectively.  Rookie Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) added five kills and a game-high four blocks.  Heritz also put up a game-high four blocks in the Daemen victory.

Defensively, Wicker continued to led the way with 10 digs, while Meghan Ballou recorded six digs.  McKrell dished out a game-high 26 assists and tallied five digs.

For Roberts, Nikki Simmonds (San Diego, Calif.) paved the way; she totaled 16 assists, seven digs and four kills.

Daemen continues East Coast Conference action next weekend Nov. 4-5, hosting NYIT and LIU Post.  The Wildcats face off against the Bears at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by another afternoon contest on Sunday against the Pioneers at 12:00 p.m.
