Wildcats Fall In Five Sets To ECC Favorites

AMHERST, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team rallied from being down two sets to none, to force a fifth and final set at Lumsden Gymnasium, but ultimately was unable to close the book on N.Y. Institute of Technology (20-25, 26-24, 26-24, 26-24, 18-20).

NYIT, who was picked as the favorite to win the league this year and the 2016 ECC Tournament Champions, improves to 21-7 overall and 8-4 in the conference with today's win.  Daemen falls to 11-13 overall with a 7-4 conference mark.  The dramatic league contest was crucial in the league's five-team fight for four playoff spots.  NYIT and Bridgeport are tied for third place, while Daemen sits in the fifth position.

The Wildcats were led by freshman Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.), Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) and Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y.), the trio posted 17, 15 and 14 kills respectively.  Ballou and Scanlan each registered double-doubles in the loss.  Ballou tallied 10 digs and Scanlan registered a team-high 20 digs.  Sophomore middle blocker Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania) added 10 kills and three blocks.

Senior setter Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y.) dished out 55 assists and tallied six digs.  Defensively, the freshman duo of Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) and Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) combined for 33 digs of the team's 72 digs.

For the Bears, Tiffany Verni (Patchogue, N.Y.) led the way with a match-high 26 kills and added 10 digs for a double-double.  Allison Fowler (Centennial, Colo.), the ECC Preseason Player of the Year, registered a game-high 65 assists.  Defensively, Chessie Santeramo (Freemont, Calif.), paved the way with 26 digs.

Daemen took a fast 4-1 lead in the opening set, but the Bears quickly evened the score 7-7 in the early going.  The two squads battled back-and-forth relentlessly, trading points and finding themselves tied once again (19-19).  NYIT rattled off two-straight points on the serve of Allison Fowler, taking the 21-19 advantage and forcing a Daemen timeout.  The Wildcats responded with a kill from Heritz, but it wasn't enough as the Bears notched the last three points of the frame, winning 25-20.  NYIT registered an impressive .345 attack percentage compared to Daemen's .079 in the set.

NYIT utilized four Wildcat errors to open the second set with an 8-4 lead, however Daemen outscored the Bears 6-3 to narrow the Bear's lead 11-10.  The run included kills from Meghan Ballou, Courtney Scanlan, Tirzah Peters and Jenn Heritz.  NYIT then used a 6-1 burst of their own to widen the gap 17-11. The Wildcats found themselves behind 19-24, but fought off five-consecutive points on the serve of Wicker to force the set into extra points.  Yet, the Daemen crusade was not enough as NYIT notched the next two points to sneak away with the 26-25 second set victory.

The Wildcats took their first lead of game 23-22 after trailing seven points (19-12) in set three.  Daemen tallied six-straight points to even the score 20-20, after straggling 20-14.  The spurt, on the serve of McKrell, included four NYIT mistakes.  The Bears tied the game 24-24 on a kill from Tiffany Verni, but Daemen capped the set 26-24 after straight kills from Heritz and Meg Ballou.

Heritz registered six kills in the frame to lead the Wildcats to a 26-24 fourth-set victory, while Scanlan tallied six digs.  After trailing 21-18, the Wildcats used a six-point run to take the 24-21 lead, but the Bears once again forced the set into extra points scoring three-consecutive points (24-24).  Daemen ultimately took the set 26-24, forcing a fifth and deciding set.

The crowd got their money's worth in a dramatic closing set, that went the extra mile and then some.  NYIT, who was trailing 14-12, outscored the Wildcats 8-4 to close out the set and match 20-18.

The Wildcats have a quick turnaround for another 12:00 p.m. ECC home contest against the LIU Post Pioneers, tomorrow afternoon at Lumsden Gymnasium.  Daemen will be honoring the lone senior on the squad, Katie Mckrell, in pre-game ceremony.
