Va. - Led by sophomore midfielder Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.) and freshman goalkeeper Maddie Flores (Seattle, Wash.), the Daemen College women's soccer team ran its overall record to 9-7-1 with a 1-0 win on the road today vs. Shepherd University in non-conference action at the SU Soccer Complex. Playing in their final game of the 2017 season, Ciaramella notched the game's lone goal, and Flores made two saves while recording her second shutout. Daemen, which was eliminated from East Coast Conference Tournament contention following a 3-0 road loss at Molloy College this past Saturday, rebounded to pick up the team's fifth shutout of the season. It's the first time that Daemen has picked up a win in their season finale since 2012 when the Wildcats defeated the University of Maine-Fort Kent 1-0 in the championship game of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships. "I thought it might be difficult for the group to get up for this game after the disappointment Saturday, but we started fast and could have scored a couple of goals if their [Shepherd's] goalkeeper hadn't made two fantastic saves," said Daemen head coach Dan Dolan who earned the 80th victory of his career today. "It was great to see us be persistent in the second half and for Lindsay to find the back of the net on a great effort into the box. It's always nice to finish the season with a win, and there are certainly a lot of positives to take away from this season which has provided some building blocks for the future." Daemen dominated possession and generated a 16-3 advantage in shot attempts and an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Despite the disparity, it took until the 71:14 mark for the Wildcats to get on the board, doing so when Ciaramella scored off a feed from freshman midfielder Celia de Pablo Esteban (Burgos, Spain). It was Ciaramella's second goal of the season, both of which coming in the last three games. That was all the Wildcats would need to pick up the win as they limited the host Rams to just one second-half shot attempt. Flores, who went the full 90 minutes for the first time since Oct. 10 (vs. Mercyhurst University), ran her personal goalkeeping record to 3-2-0 with the win. Shepherd, which will move on to compete as the No. 4 seed in the Mountain East Conference Tournament later this week, dropped to 5-6-7 on the season with today's loss. Christi LaBella made a pair of saves in 45 minutes worth of work for the Rams before giving way to Skylar Wheeler who took the loss. Daemen's nine victories this season are the most for the team since going 10-10 in 2013. The Wildcats also closed the season with a winning percentage higher than .500 for the first time since going 11-9 in 2012. Daemen will graduate just three players from their 2017 team - Kalyn Compeau (Tonawanda, N.Y.), Leah McDonell (North Tonawanda, N.Y.) and Alex Juliano (Hamburg, N.Y.). The bulk of the team's 33-player roster is set to return in 2018, including the team's top three offensive players, Jamie Boyar (Williamsville, N.Y.), de Pablo Esteban and Ciaramella who combined to account for 45 of the team's 67 points this season. Also returning will be the team's defensive core of Monique Green (Williamsville, N.Y.), Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y.), Kayla Goeddertz (Rochester, N.Y.) and Sam D'Agostino (Mississauga, Ont.), and the team's top two goalkeepers in Flores and Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.).
