The win snaps a two-game slide in league play and evens Daemen's ECC mark at 2-2 this season, while also improving to 6-3-1 overall. The Redhawks, qualifiers for the ECC Tournament in each of the last two seasons and picked fourth in the league's preseason poll this year, continued their hard luck 2017 season, now sitting at 1-9-1 overall and 0-4-0 in ECC action. RWC is winless (0-9-1) since a 1-0 defeat of Le Moyne College in their 2017 opener, and today's result was their seventh consecutive setback. Six of the Redhawks' nine losses this season have been by a single goal. On the flip side, Daemen is now 5-0 this season in one-goal games. "I thought we played excellent for the majority of the game, and really controlled the ball," said Daemen head coach Dan Dolan. "We struggled generating things in the attacking third a little bit, but defensively I thought we were fantastic. We really didn't allow them to have any easy scoring chances, so overall we're very happy with the result and the effort. It's always nice to get a win against your closest rivals." Daemen held a 10-9 advantage in total shot attempts, and the Wildcats were the more efficient team, placing six shots on frame, compared to just one for the Redhawks. Daemen had the best scoring chance of the first half when redshirt junior Sarah Britton (Syracuse, N.Y.) weaved her way through several RWC defenders before flicking a shot with her right foot that goalkeeper Kelsey Brinkel just got a piece of. The rebound caromed off to the right side of the box where sophomore midfielder Lindsay Ciaramella (St. George, Ont.) struck a shot over the crossbar. The Wildcats really started to impose their will in the second half, outshooting the Redhawks 7-2 over the first 30 minutes of the period. Sophomore midfielder Sarah Kenny (Perth, Australia) had a pair of close chances in the 56th minute thwarted after a Daemen free kick. Kenny's first shot hit a RWC defender, but she collected the rebound and send another shot toward the goal which Brinkel stopped with a diving effort. The game remained scoreless until Boyar came through with another heroic effort for the Wildcats. After taking a pass in the midfield, she juked and jived her way into the right side of the box where she created some space and sent a curling shot off her left foot which found its way over the goal line after banking off the far post at the 72:54 mark. The Wildcats leaned on goalkeeper Katelin White (Lewiston, N.Y.) and the defensive quartet of Monique Green (Williamsville, N.Y.), Alex Valenti (Clarence, N.Y.), Sam D'Agostino (Mississauga, N.Y.) and Kayla Goeddertz (Rochester, N.Y.) to protect their one-goal lead. Roberts Wesleyan managed three shots in the game's final 15 minutes; two sailed wide and the third was turned away by White, the only save she needed to make to record her second shutout of the season. Daemen's final homestand of the season continues this Saturday, Oct. 7 when the Wildcats welcome Mercy College, one of the ECC's hottest teams, to Karrer Field for an 11 a.m. start.
