For Communications Mercy Escapes With 1-0 Victory Over Wildcats AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's soccer team battled for 90 minutes but came up on the short end of a 1-0 final score against visiting Mercy College in an East Coast Conference game at Karrer Field today. Mercy, which won its fifth consecutive game to improve to 8-3 this season (4-1 in ECC play), overcame a red card issued to defender Jose Carvajal (Levittown, N.Y.) in the 48th minute which forced the Mavericks to play down a man for nearly the entire second half. Carvajal was issued the red card as the result of picking up his second yellow card which occurred when he hauled down a Daemen player in the attacking third. Daemen, which was bidding for its second-straight league win after Wednesday's overtime win at Roberts Wesleyan College, fell to 4-8 overall, and 1-4 in league play with the loss today. Junior midfielder Lucca Lacerda (Passos, Brazil) broke a scoreless tie with his goal at the 63:49 mark, accounting for the only scoring in the contest. Lacerda, a second-team All-ECC selection last season, took a pass from sophomore forward Santiago Corral (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and carried into open space just inside the box where he scored on a low shot that made its way just inside the near left post. After falling behind, the Wildcats controlled possession and tallied four of their seven shots in the contest. None was a better opportunity than a strike from the middle of the box off the foot of freshman forward Finn Krueger (Neuried, Germany) in the 82nd minute, but Mercy goalkeeper Kwantarian Van der Lara (Stockholm, Sweden) was up to the challenge as he registered his only save of the game. Van der Lara, who entered the contest with the second best goals-against average among ECC net-minders this season (1.10), registered his league-leading sixth shutout of the season. It's just the second time this season that Daemen has failed to get on the scoreboard. The Wildcats entered the game averaging 2.00 goals per game, fourth best in the league this year. Mercy managed 15 shots in the game, seven of which were on target. Freshman goalkeeper Mike D'Amato was credited with five saves in a losing effort for the Wildcats. A chippy affair, a total of seven yellow cards were doled out, five of which being issued to the Mavericks. Mercy, a team with 18 returning players which was picked fifth in the ECC preseason poll, picked up its fifth win in the all-time series with Daemen, albeit in a much different manner than the 6-0 final score from last year's meeting. Daemen's starting 11 included nine freshman, marking the 12th-straight game that head coach Bobby McColl has inserted at least that many first-year college players into the starting lineup. Daemen continues its three-game homestand Tuesday, Oct 10 with the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown coming to Karrer Field for a 1 p.m. clash.  Print Friendly Version
