Wildcats Fall To Molloy In Season Finale

Box Score ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. – The Daemen College women's volleyball team saw their 2017 season come to an end in the last regular season East Coast Conference match.   Daemen fell to Molloy College in straight-sets (25-21, 25-17, 25-21) this afternoon at Quealy Gymnasium. 
 
Daemen, which was eliminated from East Coast Conference Tournament contention follow a 3-2 loss at Queens yesterday, posted an 11-16 overall record with a 7-6 league mark in 2017.  With the win, Molloy improved to 23-5 overall and 11-2 in the conference and earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship.  The Lions also earned the top seed and will host the upcoming ECC Championship.
 
Sophomore Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) and redshirt-junior Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y.) each posted double-digit kills to led the Wildcat attack.  Ballou registered team-high 12 kills, while Scanlan notched 10.   Ballou added eleven digs and two service aces in the loss.  Rookies Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind.) and Tirzah Peters (Amherst, N.Y.) rounded out the offense with eight and four kills respectively.
 
In her last game of her career, Katie McKrell (Webster, N.Y.) registered 34 assists, four digs and two kills.  Defensively, Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) tallied a team-high 12 digs, while Georgia Greenwood (Woodstock, Ill.) and Sydney MacInnis (Superior, Colo.) posted nine and eight digs in the defeat. 
 
In the opening set, Jenn Heritz nailed down a kill to tie the game 11-11 before Molloy outscored the Wildcats 8-2 to take the 19-13 lead.  Daemen narrowed the margin 22-20, but it wasn't enough as the Lions stormed to a 25-21 first frame win.  Daemen registered a .139 attack percentage compared to Molloy's .303 percentage.
 
The teams traded points in the early going of the second set, finding themselves tied once again 6-6.  Molloy used a 10-5 run to take a 17-12 advantage.  The Wildcats were unable to catch the host team, who cruised to a 25-17 victory.
 
In the third and final set, the two teams tied on 13 different occasions, however the Lions once again outlasted the Wildcats.  After a 17-17 tie, Molloy outscored the Wildcats 8-4 to take the set and match (25-21).
 
Daemen finished the 2017 campaign with an 11-16 overall record and 7-6 East Coast Conference mark, finishing fifth in the regular season conference standings.  The Wildcats went 5-4 at home, 3-7 away and 3-4 in neutral site contests. 
 
Daemen will graduate just one player from their 2017 team, Katie McKrell.  McKrell will go down as one of the program's premiere setters.  She became just the fifth player in team history to surpass 2,000 career assists, and finished fourth in women's volleyball history in total assists with 2,549.  McKrell also ranks second in career assists per set with 8.22 in program history.
