Wildcats Come Up Short Against Saint Anselm

MANCHESTER, N.H. - A 19-7 fourth quarter lifted the Saint Anselm College women's basketball team to a 69-56 victory over Daemen College today in a non-conference game at Stoutenburgh Gymnasium. Leading 50-49 after three quarters of play, St. Anselm limited Daemen to just two field goals and extended to a double-figure lead late in the fourth quarter.

St. Anselm, an affiliate of the Northeast-10 Conference, improved to 8-5 on the season with today's win. Daemen's record fell to 3-9.

Sophomore forward Shannon Ryan (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) paced the Hawks with 23 points (19 in the second half) and nine rebounds in just 22 minutes. The 6-foot-4 Ryan, a transfer from Division I Boston College, was saddled with some first-half foul trouble but still managed her eighth 20-point game of the season, shooting 9-of-16 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. She entered the game as the second leading scorer and rebounder in the NE-10.

The Hawks also got a solid outing from freshman guard Peyton Steinman (Pittsfield, Mass.) who rewarded coach Corey Boilard with a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) in her first career start. Senior guards Ali Glennon (Bedford, N.H.) and Clairee Putnam (Windham, N.H.) posted five assists apiece, helping the Hawks total 18 assists on their 25 field goals.

The St. Anselm victory came despite a valiant effort from Daemen senior Sarah Saba (Lancaster, N.Y.) who registered 28 points, nine rebounds, two blocks and a steal while playing the full 40 minutes. Saba, who has now scored at least 10 points in 11-straight games, shot 9-for-27 from the field, 3-for-7 from downtown, and 7-for-10 from the free throw line. It was Saba's fourth 20-point game of the season, and the 26th of her career, just two shy of her career-high set earlier this season vs. Virginia Union University.

Freshman forward Caroline White (Fairport, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman guard Tiara Filbert (Batavia, N.Y.) combined for 15 points and eight boards. White (eight points), the reigning East Coast Conference Rookie of the Week, has now made at least two three-pointers in four-straight games after going 2-for-5 from downtown today.

After falling behind 13-3, Daemen went on a 14-2 run that spanned the final four minutes of the opening period and the first 1:17 of the second. Back-to-back buckets by Filbert at the start of the second quarter gave Daemen its first lead at 17-15.

St. Anselm stemmed the tide and took a six-point lead (32-26) late in the period despite Ryan being forced to the pine with fouls. An old-fashioned three-point play by Saba sparked Daemen to a 7-1 run in the final 1:35 of the period. An unconventional scoop shot by redshirt senior forward Taylor Heinold (Hamburg, N.Y.) on the final possession of the half knotted the score at 33-33.

The teams traded baskets over the first five minutes of the third quarter. Daemen grabbed the lead back at 44-43 with White's three-pointer at the 4:51 mark. But, the hosts answered with a triple by Steinman on the ensuing possession. Saba's layup at the 1:34 mark put Daemen back on top (49-48), but again the Hawks responded with a basket, this time by Kaitlyn Petrocelli (Merrimack, N.H.). Both teams went scoreless in the final minute of the period, sending the game to the fourth with a one-point edge for the Hawks.

Ryan's old-fashioned three-point play at the 3:41 mark of the fourth pushed St. Anselm's lead to 60-53, the largest spread between the two teams since their 10-point edge early in the game. A layup at the other end by Daemen's Erin Egan (Willimsville, N.Y.) made it just a two-possession game with under three minutes to play. The Wildcats would have two chances to cut into the lead further, but missed three-pointers on consecutive possessions. As the lid remained on the Daemen hoop, St. Anselm pounced with seven-straight points, five of which came at the free throw. Another three-point play by Ryan, this one with just under a minute remaining, put the Hawks up by 12 points (67-55), essentially sealing the deal. Daemen ended up shooting 2-for-18 from the field in the period.

Daemen looks to salvage a split of their road trip to the New England area when visiting St. Michael's College for a 3 p.m. tip-off tomorrow.
