Daemen Harriers Finish 8th At Stampede Invitational

AMHERST, N.Y. - The Daemen College men's cross country team returned to action for the first time in two weeks, finishing eighth at the Stampede Invitational hosted by University at Buffalo at Audubon Golf Course.

Daemen accumulated 214 points in the team standings to sit 20 points back of seventh-place Colgate University. Daemen was one of two NCAA Division II teams competing in the 8K race today which also featured four NCAA Division I affiliates and two from the top collegiate division in Canada. University of Pittsburgh out of the Atlantic Coast Conference topped the field, placing all five of its scorers in the first eleven finishers to amass just 33 total points. McMaster University (40) out of Canada finished second, and the host UB Bulls (78 points) came in third.

Junior Lucas Canales (Ithaca, N.Y.) paced the Wildcats today by posting a career-best 8K time of 27:08.6. The posted time shaved more than 80 seconds off Canales' previous career-best (28:33.7) which he set at the Harry F. Anderson Invitational last season. He finished 47th today out of 85 total competitors.

Sophomore Josh Bodnar (Fillmore, N.Y.), already an East Coast Conference Runner of the Week honoree this season, also established a new personal benchmark for the 8K distance. Bodnar's time of 27:30.3 put him in sub-28-minute territory for the first time in his career. His previous career-best, also posted at last year's Harry F. Anderson Invitational, was 28:08.6. He finished 57th today.

Freshman Mike Swiniarski (Akron, N.Y.), junior Timothy Poole (Fayetteville, N.Y.) and redshirt freshman Cale Silvestri (Elma, N.Y.) rounded out the Wildcats' scorers with five places separating the three runners. Swiniarski finished 72nd with a time of 29:32.9. Poole, racing for the 12th time in his collegiate career, finished 74th with a time of 30:02.9. Silvestri finished 77th with a time of 30:34.7.

Redshirt freshman Dan Schaffer (Endicott, N.Y.) from Binghamton University won today's race with a time of 24:38.0, edging Pitt senior Ryan Hughes (Ashburn, Va.) (24:43.6) by five seconds.

Today's meet was held on the same course that will be used when Daemen hosts the NCAA Division II East Region Championship later this season (Saturday, Nov. 4), a meet which determines the Region's three national championship qualifying teams and individuals.

Daemen is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 23 at this year's version of the Harry F. Anderson Invitational hosted on campus by Roberts Wesleyan College.
