For Communications Women's Tennis Downs St. Michael's 6-3 COLCHESTER, Vt. - For the third-straight season, the Daemen College women's tennis team is off to a 1-0 start following their 6-3 defeat of host St. Michael's College this afternoon in non-league action at the SMC Tennis Courts. The match marked the 2017-18 season opener for both the Wildcats and Purple Knights. After falling behind 2-1 at the conclusion of doubles play, the Wildcats rebounded to win five of the six singles matches to seal the overall dual-match victory.  Newcomers Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.), Giovanna Paschoalin (Sao Caetano Do Sul, Brazil) and Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) all played a key role with wins in the first singles action of their respective collegiate careers. "I was very happy to see us come back after a slow start in doubles," said fifth-year head coach Stephen Beatty. "I knew that if we stepped it up, we would have a good chance at getting the result we're looking for. Everybody played really well, especially our three freshmen." Yuen teamed with veteran Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda), the team's lone senior, to pull out an 8-4 win at second doubles and help Daemen avoid a difficult 3-0 hole. The Wildcats then dominated singles play with all five Daemen points being won in straight sets. Yuen made her debut in the first singles position and defeated sophomore Abby Ramsay (Bedford, N.H.) 6-0, 7-6. Paschoalin downed junior Margaret de Pont (Norton, Mass.) 6-3, 6-4 in the second singles position. And, Stasiuk was a 6-3, 6-0 winner in fourth singles over freshman Melissa Wood (Stratham, N.H.). Daemen's veteran contributors, Ringler and Jess Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) got into the act as well. Ringler made it a two-point day personally with her 6-1, 6-0 victory over SMC senior Amelia Weeks (Clinton, Wash.). It was the 31st singles win of Ringler's career which ranks second in team history. In fifth singles, Robins ousted sophomore Caroline Summer (Needham, Mass.) 7-5, 6-2 for the 21st singles win of her career, good for fifth all-time. Daemen which has now won its season opener in four of the last five seasons, has never started 2-0 since the program's inception with the 2012-13 season. Coming off a program-record nine-win season in 2016-17, the Wildcats go for that elusive 2-0 start tomorrow (Sunday, Sept. 3) at American International College.
