7-2 Win Earns The Wildcats Their First-Ever 2-0 Start

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Daemen College women's tennis team cruised to a 7-2 win over American International College in non-conference play here today. The win gave the Wildcats their first 2-0 start since the program began six years ago. Daemen opened its 2017-18 season with a 6-3 win at Saint Michael's College yesterday. Today's match marked the 2017-18 season opener for the host Yellow Jackets, a NCAA Division II member of the Northeast-10 Conference.

Daemen opened the match by winning two of the three doubles matches, and then secured the historic victory by winning the fourth, fifth and sixth singles matches all by identical 6-0, 6-0 scores.

Freshman Lorissa Yuen (Portland, Ore.) improved to 2-0 at No. 1 singles after posting an 8-3 win over sophomore Carleyah McLean (Pickering, Ontario), a NE-10 All-Rookie Team selection last year. Yuen also teamed up with senior Gretchen Ringler (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) to post an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles. That tandem is now 2-0 in doubles play this year.

Ringler, freshman Christina Stasiuk (Bowmansville, N.Y.) and junior Jess Robins (North Tonawanda, N.Y./North Tonawanda) all remained perfect in singles play with wins today. Ringler defeated freshman Morgan Hill (Oakland, Calf.) 8-4 at No. 3 singles, while Stasiuk and Robins both posted 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively. Junior Morgan Park (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) recorded her first singles win of the year following a 6-0, 6-0 win over freshman Ashley Ata (West Haven, Conn.) at No. 6 singles.

"We got off to a better start in doubles play today and I was really happy with our approach to the match," said fifth-year head coach Stephen Beatty. "Lorissa (Yuen) was very impressive again today. As a freshmen she is making an immediate impact and she will be one to watch as our season goes along."

Stasiuk and Park registered their first doubles win of the year after posting an 8-0 win over senior Yliannis Knaggs (Miami, Fla.) and freshman Connie Yew (Bronx, N.Y.) at No. 3 doubles.

Daemen continues its season-opening tour of New England with a non-conference match at Bentley College tomorrow (Sept. 4).
