For Communications Wildcats Cruise To 14th-Straight Regular Season League Win ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The Daemen College women's volleyball team needed less than 90 minutes to dispatch of rival Roberts Wesleyan College this evening, cruising to a 3-0 victory (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) in an East Coast Conference match at the Voller Athletic Center. The win extended Daemen's regular season ECC winning streak to 14 consecutive matches dating back to last season. Daemen's third-straight win overall improved the team to 6-8 on the season, and the Wildcats are 3-0 in league play for the second time since joining the ECC in 2013. The Wildcats opened league play this past weekend with home wins over Mercy College (3-0) and the University of Bridgeport (3-2). Daemen is the defending ECC regular season champion after winning their final 11 regular season league contests in 2016 to finish with a 13-1 mark. With the loss, Roberts Wesleyan fell to 1-16 overall and 1-2 in ECC play this season. Daemen has now won five-straight meetings with the Redhakws, and 15 of the last 20 dating back to 2008. Redshirt junior Courtney Scanlan (Ellicottville, N.Y.) and sophomores Cristina Apostol (Bucharest, Romania) and Meghan Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) combined for 26 of Daemen's 37 kills to lead the way. Scanlan and Apostol shared match-high honors with nine kills apiece The Wildcats posted a .242 hitting percentage in the match, compared to just .125 for the hosts. Sophomore Sydney MacInnis (Superior, Colo.) was the lone Daemen setter to see action tonight. She posted a season-high 28 assists, just three shy of her career-best performance. It marked MacInnis' third double-figure effort in the last five matches. Defensively, the Wildcats were once again without starting libero Ali Greenwood (North Aurora, Ill.) who missed her third-straight match with an injury. But, Ballou led the way with 11 digs - her eighth double-figure effort of the season. Freshmen Georgia Wicker (Woodstock, Ill.) and Jenn Heritz (Granger, Ind,) also contributed defensively. Wicker stepped into the libero role and recorded seven digs while Heritz controlled the net with five blocks. In the opening set, Daemen used a 6-1 spurt to turn a 16-12 lead into an insurmountable 22-13 advantage. The Redhawks pulled within six (24-18), but Apostol hammered down a kill on the ensuing point to end the set for the Wildcats. Daemen hit .333 in the set with 15 kills and just four errors. With Daemen leading 20-15 in the second set, RWC pulled with two by winning three-straight points. But, aided by three RWC errors, Daemen responded with a 4-0 spurt of their own to re-establish control and a 24-18 lead. Shortly thereafter, Scanlan's third kill of the set clinched it for Daemen, putting the Wildcats ahead 2-0 in the match. Daemen led by as many as six points in the third set before RWC cut the deficit to two late in the set (20-18). Daemen called on Scanlan who notched back-to-back kills to spark a set- and match-ending 5-1 run. Freshman Allison Post (Windsor, Calif.) and Apostol recorded single kills in the run, and sophomore Kailey Ballou (Eden, N.Y.) added her third service ace of the match. The Wildcats powered down 14 kills while committing just one error (.419 hitting percentage) in the set. The Wildcats are back in action at the Voller Athletic Center this Saturday, Sept. 30 for a neutral site contest vs. Pace University out of the Northeast-10 Conference. Print Friendly Version
